Population Numbers

So, they\’ve changed the estimates of the future population levels again.

Rising immigration, a higher birthrate among migrant families and longer lifespans are on course to lift the population by at least 15 million by 2051, from last year\’s 60 million total. There are fears it could even hit 77 million.

Only one small thing. The headline figure will be used to insist that we must "do something". It might even be correct that we must. But as far as the EU nationals immigration is concerned we can\’t actually do anything. Even if we hadn\’t opened the floodgates, our power to limit it expires in 2011. Extra EU immigration is very small by comparison. Birth rates of immigrants , well, there\’s no known cure for them except time: second and third generation such trend towards the same birthrates as the indigenes. And the third, longer lifespans: well, do we actually want to try and do anything about this? It\’s usually thought of as a good thing, not a bad, isn\’t it?

  1. “Birth rates of immigrants , well, there’s no known cure for them except time.”

    Wrong.

No chain migration, no family re-unification.

“And the third, longer lifespans: well, do we actually want to try and do anything about this? It’s usually thought of as a good thing, not a bad, isn’t it?”

Yes indeed. It’s the sort of thing that goes through your mind when you’re waiting for a TB test.

Funny how the left can be so willing to take my money “to help the less fortunate” but when it comes to helping the less fortunate they seem curiously reluctant.

Come on Martin, you can do better than this. You’ve failed to mention the free houses and cars and satellite TV that immigrants get. And their swan-eating habits.

  3. SORRY SEEMS TO BE A FORMATING ISSUE HERE.

    “And their swan-eating habits”

Our east Europeans seem to prefer ducks, I would not mind as it keeps the numbers down a bit, bu they always seem to take the white ones?

  4. do something?
Yep use it as an excuse to get out of the EU, law of unexpected consequences me thinks.

Extra EU immigration is very small by comparison? expect for all the boat people the Italians etc ,give Euro passports too in exchange for heading north, and we cant wait for all the Bulgarians and Romanians to arrive, and after that the Turkish?

and no probs in housing them hey tim, you get keep your ocean view and we have to loose our green belt.

As for birth rates, you still have to plan and build for the expected population surge even if it dies down afterwards.

As for longer lifespans, animals packed in tend to get stressed and die younger, i guess the stress for humans will be this and total social disharmony.

Why do you live in Portugal Tim, is it a quality of life issue?

  5. “As for longer lifespans, animals packed in tend to get stressed and die younger, i guess the stress for humans will be this and total social disharmony.”

You mean like the appalling quality of life and social disharmony in Hong Kong, Luxembourg and Singapore, right?

  6. “How about being asked to prove that your marriage (to an Irish national born in Ireland) is not one of convenience?”

    Why? Home Office?

  7. “Come on Martin, you can do better than this”

    OK.

How about being asked to prove that your marriage (to an Irish national born in Ireland) is not one of convenience?

Really gets the blood boiling, that does.

And you’ll be pleased to know the TB test was negative.

  8. “You mean like the appalling quality of life and social disharmony in Hong Kong, Luxembourg and Singapore, right?”

And these are countries are they? I have them down as city states, how about Cairo where half the population live in cemeteries.

And again countries as in proper countries with high degree of ethnic diversity tend to have lots of crime and inter ethnic violence, the USA, Brazil, South Africa, France, Britain, India, Pakistan.

75 million in the UK, or should i say southern England will be a disaster

  9. “How about being asked to prove that your marriage (to an Irish national born in Ireland) is not one of convenience?”

    Why? Home Office?”

No, although your assumption that Irish nationals are automatically subject to surveillance is just a wee bit 1981.

The explanation provided by the registrar was the suspiciously high number of marriages being contracted between Dutch women and Nigerian men in the Edinburgh area during 2007.

Now, neither of us is Dutch or Nigerian; neither of us actually looks Dutch or Nigerian; but that doesn’t count. Our marriage was contracted after a 10 year engagement. We have held a joint mortgage for two years, and have shared a roof for eight . My wife has lived in the UK for 13 years, and her work history is better than mine. She has stuck by me during depression and penury; on one occasion we were two days away from being made homeless – I had been made redundant three weeks before we were due to move house. I have tried to support her since the sudden, and very tragic, death of her brother at his own hands.

Our reward was to be told to prove ourselves to the system, when the persons whom the system itself says are abusing it do not come from the same places as us; do not carry the same documemts as us; do not sound like us; and do not look like us.

The form that the required proof took was that my wife had to produce evidence of three years’ continuous residence in the UK. Just as well she’s a good housekeeper, and had kept all her P60’s, payslips and bank statements in chronological order.

    Enough detail for you?

  10. “No, although your assumption that Irish nationals are automatically subject to surveillance is just a wee bit 1981.”

No, you made the assumption that I made the assumption. The thought never crossed my mind, in fact.

I assumed it was a Home Office “bogus marriages” thing, and made the assumption that the Home Office are spiteful, incompetent bastards and we’d all be a lot more free and happy if the whole department was shut down and all the civil servants recycled as animal feed.

I was correct. But in any case, no permission is needed for an EU/EEA national to marry a British citizen.

  11. Are not all marriages designed to be convenient. It is a good idea for the wife to live quite close you know.
    Err hem , hem.

  12. “But in any case, no permission is needed for an EU/EEA national to marry a British citizen.”

My thoughts precisely. Now tell that to Edinburgh City Council.
