Beating Climate Change

The latest suggestion:

The campaign will urge people to plan meals, write – and stick to – shopping lists, make smaller portions, and learn to prepare and cook leftovers and food which is past its prime.

Yup, we should all eat rotten food to save the planet.

  1. Shurely, cutting down on – hic – alcohol would hlep:

“Total recorded alcohol consumption in the UK is estimated to have doubled between 1960 and 2002. . . The researchers . . found steady increases in death rates in Scotland, England and Wales during the 1970s. This accelerated in the 1980s, and again from the nineties onwards. In contrast, death rates for both men and women in other European countries declined by 20% to 30% from the early 1970s. Between the periods 1987-1991, and 1997-2001, male deaths from cirrhosis in Scotland more than doubled, and in England and Wales they rose by over two-thirds.”

  2. Bob, those statistics indicate that it WON’T help the planet to cut down on alcohol: all those people will be alive, emitting fossil CO2. Whereas if they drink to excess and die, their corpse will only emit a small amount of CO2 as it rots.

  3. Kay – you are probably right, especially since:

“In 2004 there were 8,221 alcohol-related deaths in the UK, almost double the total of 4,144 in 1991. . In Scotland, the alcohol-related death rates for males and females were around double the rates for the UK as a whole in 2002-2004”

    But then:

“A UNITED Nations report has labelled Scotland the most violent country in the developed world, with people three times more likely to be assaulted than in America. England and Wales recorded the second highest number of violent assaults while Northern Ireland recorded the fewest.”

Which is probably why we read reports like this:

“Police in Aberdeen are investigating a racially motivated assault on a man wearing an England shirt.”

“Prosecutors are investigating a BBC Newsnight programme in which Scottish youths smashed up a car decorated with England flags, police said.”

“AN ENGLAND football fan living in Scotland blamed the country’s First Minister yesterday for stoking anti-English racism after his windows were smashed because he was displaying the St George’s flag.”

Not wonder the SNP want the BBC in Scotland to be controlled by the Scottish Parliament.

  4. “Return to wartime values and reduce emissions, say campaigners”

Does that mean that if we use hybrid Lancasters we can bomb the crap out of Angela Merkel?
