Absolutely Agreed Polly!

It\’s time to end faith and grammar schools that damage children\’s chances and limit most parents\’ choices.

It is absolutely the time to remove the limits on most parent\’s choices. Of course, we shouldn\’t do that by the method you advocate, which is that pupils are assigned to a school, rather, we should work the other way around. We should maximise parents\’ choices by slapping a voucher on the back of every kid and letting parents choose as they wish.

As they do in Sweden.

  1. And when more children want to go to a school than that school has places, what then?

Tim adds: Erm, exaclty the same as happens when more people want to live in a house than can, they go to another one perhaps?

  2. Why would a voucher give parents more choice (‘maximise’) than simply giving them the cash?

Tim adds: Well, maximal choice would in fact be don’t tax everyone in the first place but I don’t see that one flying anytime soon, do you?

  3. “In non-religious primaries 20% of children have free school meals, but only 11% in Church of England schools, 15% in Roman Catholic schools and 3% in Jewish schools. But look at the damaging reverse in Muslim secondary schools: 34% are on free school meals, compared with 15% nationally, dangerously segregating Muslim children by class as well as by race and religion. Geography anyway segregates them, but faith schools make it 10 times worse.”

Polly may like to know that in Tower Hamlets the default “free” school meal is halal, even in the VA “faith schools”, whatever their denomination.

  4. Matthew is right – scary;) – cash/tax credit would be the best solution. I see the voucher system as a first step.
But a voucher system will not work without slashing regulations and the planning laws.

And you think vouchers will fly?

Tim adds: They do work in a number of other countries, so not sure why they won’t here.
