I believe they had to add a little sand to the mix to make the grindstones work.
I thought most of the wear was caused by the grit in the bread from the soft stone used to grind the flour.
Didn’t know this. It is now locked away in my memory banks for when the world is thrown back to some prehistoric state and I have to rebuild civilisation one mill at a time. I best brush up on my ability to recognise metal ores.
