American Law

Odd:

AMERICA has told Britain that it can “kidnap” British citizens if they are wanted for crimes in the United States.

A senior lawyer for the American government has told the Court of Appeal in London that kidnapping foreign citizens is permissible under American law because the US Supreme Court has sanctioned it.

I thought everybody already knew this? The US courts don\’t worry about how you got to be in one of them: that you\’re there is all they worry about.

  1. Yes, but kidnapping is illegal, so is the US Government officially sanctioning the breaking of laws (by its own officials) in the UK? Would it extradite these officials to the UK for prosecution?

  2. Don’t be daft – of course they wouldn’t.

My response would be that the kidnap of a British citizen from British soil by agents of a foreign government is an act of war.

The UK would clearly “lose” a war with the US, but the result wouldn’t be all that pretty for the US either. The US government and its agencies would be advised to think long and hard before they authorised an act of war against proably their closest ally.
