Excellent News!

Police in Scotland are to get a better pay deal than their colleagues south of the border for the first time, it emerged yesterday as a furious row broke out over the pay award for forces in England.

Superb!

Let\’s hope this is the beginning of the end for national pay deals of all types. It\’s insane that we have the same pay rate for a copper in rural Scotland as we do for one in Birmingham, given that the costs of living in each place are so wildly different. Same with nurses, doctors and all the rest of them. Abolish the whole system of setting wages nationally say I.

  1. “Police in Scotland are to get a better pay deal than their colleagues south of the border for the first time.”

They lead a more hazardous life north of the border.

“A UNITED Nations report has labelled Scotland the most violent country in the developed world, with people three times more likely to be assaulted than in America. England and Wales recorded the second highest number of violent assaults while Northern Ireland recorded the fewest.”

As Blair so rightly said all those years ago: “Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime.”

  2. Bob B, precisely. That’s the beauty of each force determining its own pay rates: the riskier areas will have to pay more, the tamer areas less, assuming that people regard risk as a negative. Thus both the cost as well as the numbers of police officers can be managed in proportion to their need.

  3. Regarding the English pay deal, I like these two quotes from Jacqui Smith, via the BBC story http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7132024.stm:

“The arbitration board recommended an award of 2.5% which we have accepted.”

Ms Smith added that the pay award would be “just under 2%”, keeping it in line with the government’s target for inflation.
