RUSI

Oh dear, these guys don\’t seem to have quite grasped the new digital world. A report out today:

Climate change could cause global conflicts as large as the two world wars but lasting for centuries unless the problem is controlled, a leading defence think tank has warned.

The Royal United Services Institute said a tenfold increase in research spending, comparable to the amount spent on the Apollo space programme, will be needed if the world is to avoid the worst effects of changing temperatures.

Well, that sounds interesting. So what is it that they are actually saying, rather than what\’s in the press release?

The report page.

What? No .pdf download? We actually have to pay to read your report?

Sorry guys, you\’ve just lost a great deal of interest in your case.

Really? Even without using nukes, given the power of modern conventional weapons, do we have enough people and decent targets to sustain such a war for centuries?

If we in theory can do this, then obviously the effects of global warming (not to mention the other great problem, Peak Oil), can’t be _that_ bad.

  2. Well, as soon as these global conflicts get underway and we start tossing about nukes we get a Nuclear Winter, so end of problem.

I see Peak Oil mentioned above … damned if I know which to worry about, Global Warming or us running out of the stuff that supposedly causes it…

  3. Think tank cites global warming as reason for 10 fold increase in spending in its area……..they are just joining in the fun.

  4. RUSI: generally well worth reading but pricey. Last time I looked at the subscription charge it was several hundred punds a year.

Janes: always worth a read but ultra pricey. £7K a year last time I looked.

But I wouldn’t pay a brass farthing to someone who is just rehashing a load of global warmening hype that you can get off the web for free.
