As Always

A woman was told to remove her Christmas lights by a housing association worker in case they offended non-Christian neighbours.

Turns out that the council doesn\’t mind, the non-Christian neighbours are all in favour of them and the only person who was even vaguely worried about them was the housing association worker.

A few too many courses on racial awareness perhaps?

  1. The bizarre thing is her decorations aren’t even Christian, unless snowmen play a part in the nativity that I’d previously overlooked.

You sure? Weren’t Frosty, Glitter and Santa the three wise horsemen who brought gifts of famine, pestilence and war?

  3. I wondered whether this story is really about neighbours being fed up of the constant light (and noise?). The story doesn’t actually mention a religious angle after the headline.

Well Glitter certainly lurks around young children giving them presents, he got deported from Vietnam for it.

  5. Every time one of these stories hits the papers, we get the same routine.

    1. Harmless member of the public is threatened to stop doing something legal, by some official, from some council or quango.

    2. Victim complains to a journalist and it gets published.

    3. Management disown the activities of their own official. Claim it’s all a misunderstanding.

It’s getting a bit too predictable and regular for my liking. What I suspect is that these prodnoses are in the business of intimidating the law abiding, and they only back down when they are called out by the newspapers. For every householder who digs her heels in, there are several more who cave in.

This is how they bully us into submission.
