What do you mean \”self financing\”?

The report, The Essential Guide to EU Quangos 2009, will estimate that British taxpayers alone contribute £103 million a year towards the organisations\’ budgets.

Dan Lewis of the Economic Research Council, one of the report\’s authors, said: "There is huge duplication with organisations we already have in this country.

"There is the Food Safety Authority, but we already have no end of food safety bodies here. What real value can it add?"

While some of the quangos are self-financing, most are subsidised by taxpayers.

"Self financing"? Do you mean that people voluntarily pay for the output? In which case they are not a quango but a business. Or do you mean that people involuntarily pay? As I have recently had a bill for €70,000 odd to get the REACH bureaucracy to simply read my applications to register chemicals?

  1. There are some who would have it that if they are subsidised by the taxpayer ie paid for by the government, then they aren’t QUANGOs at all, they are more accurately just government agencies.

  2. Tim, the ID scheme is “self-financing”, in that we will be compelled to pay at least £30 to enrol, and employers will be compelled to pay for the Identity Verification Service in order to check that the state has given us permission to work.
