Two Komodo dragons mauled a fruit-picker to death in eastern Indonesia, the latest attack on humans by the world\’s largest lizard.

Police Sergeant Kosmas Jalang said Muhamad Anwar, 31, was attacked on Komodo, one of four islands where the giant reptile is found in the wild, minutes after he fell out of a sugar-apple tree yesterday.

He was bleeding badly from bites to his hands, body, legs and neck after two lizards, waiting below, attacked him, according to a neighbour, Theresia Tawa. He died at a clinic on the neighbouring island of Flores soon after.

Attacks on humans by Komodo dragons, said to number at fewer than 4,000 in the wild, are rare, but seem to have increased in recent years.

Just last night I was (re) reading Douglas Adams´"Last chance to see" which was of course about (in part) Komodo Dragons.

Should I try reading Hitchikers´ Guide to night to see if we really will get that hyperspace bypass?

“Indonesia invited the Nature Conservancy, a Virginia-based environment protection group, to help manage the park in 1995. An Indonesian subsidiary of the group, called Putri Naga Komodo, gained a tourism concession for the park in 2005 and is investing in the conservation effort some $10 million of its own money and matching financing from international donors.

With this funding and advice, park authorities put an end to villagers’ traditional deer hunting, enforcing a prohibition that had been widely disregarded. They declared canines an alien species, and outlawed the villagers’ dogs, which used to keep dragons away from homes. Park authorities banned the goat sacrifices, previously staged on Komodo for the benefit of picture-snapping tourists.”

  2. If someone was to compile a list of World causes of death, I wonder what would be rarer than, “eaten by lizards”…

Would you not be better to check the notice board in the local planning department on Alpha Centauri?

  4. I think we can be confident that the Greens care more about lizards than about People of Brownness. You could call it colour prejudice.
