George reveals the truth

Monbiot:

Environmentalism is not just about replacing one set of technologies with another. Technological change is important, but it will protect the biosphere only if we also tackle issues such as economic growth, consumerism and corporate power.

Quite, that really is the argument in a nutshell.

All the reasonable people are arguing that replacing carbon emitting technologies with non such (or low such to be accurate) will solve the problems. All the nutters are screaming that we have to build a New Man, a non-consumerist, non-economic growth one.

As the move from horse shit to carbon emissions showed, the move to a new technology is simple enough over the course of a few decades. As the Russian experiment in creating a New Soviet Man showed, 70 years of trying will end in entire and utter failure.

Which is why reasonable people argue for the technological route, the nutters for let\’s try and elect a new species one.

  1. You read Growth Recurring by Eric Jones? I think it would be right down your alley on the naturalness of growth, I highly highly recommend it.

The anti-growth lot do rather irritate me.

  2. So I was right, environmentalism is nothing to do with saving the planet really, but just a reason to remould society in the image that the environmentalists fancy. No wonder the Communists latched on to it pretty fast when Communism collapsed in the USSR and Eastern Europe. A great cover for their ambitions.

  3. That was a particularly jarring comment among many in a frankly unimpressive show and debate last night. Who needs another environmentalist wank-fest.

  4. 1. The human race is not perfectible and is full of nutters.

    2. Environmentalist extremists are nutters.

    3. Environmentalist nutters are inevitable, so we better get used to having them around and we better get used to never, ever dropping our guard, as so many societies have done in the past. Bolsheviks, anyone?

  5. “All the reasonable people are arguing that replacing carbon emitting technologies with non such (or low such to be accurate) will solve the problems. All the nutters are screaming that we have to build a New Man, a non-consumerist, non-economic growth one.”

These are not mutually exclusive. See, e.g the transhumanist movement which literally wants to ‘build a New Man’ by genetically modifying human beings to improve our potential physical and mental abilities.
