  1. IE has a vastly bigger market share than other browsers. Therefore the IQ of its users will trend towards the population norm, which is likely to be lower than techy-enthusiasts using other browsers. You, Tim, of all people should have seen that.

  2. Come on- according to the study, as reported in the Daily Wail, the IQ of IE users is 80. So if true it isn’t close to population norm but in around bottom 10%.

  3. @Ross Do you really believe the average IQ of over 50% of web surfers is in the bottom 10% of all IQs?

  4. People of exceptionally low IQ would be using the computer provided by whatever institution they reside in; this is likely to be a MS machine, so would have IE as the default browser.

  5. @Ross OK. So we are agreed. It is a fundamentally flawed survey that even if true would make no sense.

  6. Ian Bennett,

People of exceptionally low IQ would be using the computer provided by whatever institution they reside in; this is likely to be a MS machine, so would have IE as the default browser.

It’s a little more complicated than that. IE6 is the browser used by some large corporations (nearly all home users would have updated to a higher browser). They’re still on IE6 because they have applications that were built with it in mind, and the organisation won’t go through the testing phase for a better browser. Those users also can’t upgrade to a higher browser because the machines are locked down.

But in the case of senior or more technical staff, they generally have a choice (and don’t choose IE6).

It therefore isn’t surprising that IE6 has lower IQ ratings, but 80 seems ridiculous.
