Is this ignorance I see before me?

To reinforce British diplomats\’ wilful blindness, the Foreign Office has closed half a dozen embassies in Latin America in recent years, to minimise the danger of receiving subversive opinions from foreign capitals. All part of Britain\’s national decline.

Erm, isn\’t that in fact the flip side of the European Diplomatic Service?

Replacement of individual country embassies with EU ones?

  1. I find it hard to believe the Foreign Office is faster or more reliable in conveying the opinion of people in Latin America than, say, CNN.

And that is not meant to be praise of CNN.

The Foreign Service could be out sourced to Thomas Cook without any loss of core services. It is pretty much all Embassies do these days anyway. Maybe Thomas Cook could share the job with some touts from the British business community.

  2. Is this Richard Gott – soviet “agent of influence” – bemoaning the decline of Britain?!

    What a complete twat.

  3. It’s rather amazing that the article doesn’t mention that the Falkland Islanders, at least when last asked, want to stay British.

  4. The two Falklands articles today are amazing.

Richard Gott, who is one of the worst people alive, has a piece that’s a disgrace to the left and is exactly what people who hate the Guardian think the whole paper is like; meanwhile Dominic Sandbrook has a piece that’s a disgrace to the right and is exactly what people who hate the Daily Mail think the whole paper is like.

(the Graun’s a better paper than the DM on aggregate, but while the Sandbrook piece is insane and false, the Gott piece manages to be worse).

  5. “one of the worst people alive” might be an overstatement, given the continued existence of people such as Blair, Putin. I think that Gott fits best in the category of useful idiot – although he might belong in a separate sub-category of useful cretin, eg for admitting to accepting KGB hospitaility because he thought it was a bit of a lark.

  6. diogenes – “I think that Gott fits best in the category of useful idiot – although he might belong in a separate sub-category of useful cretin, eg for admitting to accepting KGB hospitaility because he thought it was a bit of a lark.”

His loud and on-going support of Cuba suggests that his excuses are feeble and not to be believed. What else was he going to say? That he knew precisely what he was doing? That he wanted the Soviets to win the Cold War and impose dictatorship on the rest of us? I don’t see anyone admitting that.

  7. The Sandbrook piece was pretty entertaining though (Prime Minister Miliband! Quelle horreur! Also, how the hell do you retrofit a submarine for women?), plus it had the added benefit of riling up the Occuscum lovers like Andy from Cornwall.

  8. SMFS – my post should not be taken as implying that I support “useful idiots”…personally, they should all have been shipped off to live as happily as Philby and Burgess did in the Soviet Union..loudly complaining that the plumbing was not up to scratch etc. and that the natives were smelly oiks.
