  1. I had an Aussie friend living temporarily in France. She thought she’d do “voluntary” work – you know, unpaid work to help the poor and afflicted. When she tried to explain this aim to Frenchpersons, they couldn’t understand what she was driving at.

The result looks lovely but I am forced to the conclusion that the CAF survey reflects a British idea of charity and that someone else’s survey would give a very different result.
British ex-colonies come 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th (UK being 5th) and head the list in Western Europe, Central & Eastern Europe, Southern Europe, North America, Caribbean, Southern America, Australasia, East Asia, South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa. The only two regions which contain ex-colonies where one of them doesn’t come top are Central America and South-East Asia.
