Ouch!

The tragedy of it is that while the other dolls have been updated to their modern forms, so the drunk plumber has a mobile phone, the Jew remains stuck as he would have appeared in 1940, there being now too few Jews left in Poland to update the stereotype.

  1. Well to be fair to the doll makers, if they want to make a Jewish doll what the hell should it look like? If I look at the London Jewish community I grew up in, I’ve a mate who’s a plumber with a mobile phone & indeed a drink problem although his revolves more around being slow to get his rounds in. He’d be distinctive in his cargo pants, T-shirt & baseball cap which isn’t much different from what my lawyer, Shimon, wears when he’s hosting a barbie. However if I go over to Stamford Hill where the Hasidim live, they look just like that doll – more 1840 than 1940 & yep Chuni – the guy I used to do a lot of work for, I’m the convenient yock who’d work Sundays – is a diamond merchant down the Garden, dresses the dress & his family were indeed originally from E. Europe.

  2. It seems to me rather insensitive to talk about a “crass victim mentality” in this case. Because, while I see no reason to take offence at those dolls, there is a reason why there are are many fewer Jews in Poland than there used to be.

  3. PaulB – “Because, while I see no reason to take offence at those dolls, there is a reason why there are are many fewer Jews in Poland than there used to be.”

Although that had little (but not nothing) to do with the actual Poles.

  4. SMFS – the more you examine the territories occupied by the Nazis, the more complex the situation becomes. For example, there were cases in Poland of the locals behaving much more brutally to the Jews – organising their own traditional pogroms rather than waiting for the extermination camps to come along. I would even hesitate before saying that the circumstances had “little” to do with the Poles. The answer might actually be “a lot more than you think”.

  5. I once was the token goy director of an orthodox Jewish ISP. My job was to take all the profit made on the Sabbath. Their job was to ensure (as per Hollywood “%age of the net”) that that profit was zero.
