Hmm, lessee here

What\’s important is that Jessie J is happy with the way she is – lesbian or bisexual – and that girls see that it\’s OK to fancy girls

Pretty young thing with legs up to here likes shagging both men and women.

I\’ve checked among that vital market segment of portly middle aged men and I find that we don\’t care a bit.

Quite in favour of it in fact…..

  1. Yeah but no but yeah but…

Think poor Joe McElderry – X factor winner from a few years ago. Nice looking lad, pleasant demeanour, good enough singer, ticked all the boxes, and should have had his poster on the bedroom wall of every 14 year old girl in the country as well as appealing to their mothers and grannies. But then comes out the closet, and vanishes.

If you are going to sell yourself on sex appeal, you gotta let your target audience think you’re a chance.

OK, its his life, probably better being honest etc. But it did come at a price.

  2. How many double standards can be packed into a single para?
JJ should be left alone with her sexuality because she is a musician..and it’s all about the music.
How many, and here I find myself on thin ice, otherwise blameless politicos has the Grauniad pilloried for mild peccadilloes? Surely it’s all about the politics, nah?

  3. Joe McElderry vanished? Lessee, winning Popstar to Operastar, signing with Decca, releasing two gold-selling albums and touring and basically working his guts out for the last 2 years or so. (The wife and stepdaughter are fans and acquaintances of his, so I get nearly all the inside gossip).

Then there must be another reason for it. Because, God knows, 14 year old girls seem obsessed, to the exclusion of all other men, with homosexuals. Or at least people who can do a good impression of homosexuals. Can Justin Beiber sue if I go all Jason Donovan on him?

    Which is probably reassuring actually.

In East Asia there is a large industry producing works involving gay love stories – not just Japan but Korea, Hong Kong and increasingly the mainland of China too. Their products are virtually entirely consumed by teenage girls.

  5. Apologies to Joe – maybe he has had an upturn since last I looked. I don’t follow it that closely.

I was with an organisation that tried to book him for an event in the NE back in late 2010, and the rates he was charging were not exactly those of an in-demand A-lister. The conversation in our office at the time got round to the rapid fall from grace, and the possible decline.

Good luck to him – I liked him on X Factor.

  6. It’s a standard part of the popstarlet life to express lesbianism as an option whether or not you like clam munching.

She will be doing the rehab bit soon.

  7. Notable gender asymmetry: in terms of erotica, for girls a girl-girl scene is less extreme than a boy-girl scene. For boys, a boy-boy scene is more extreme than a boy-girl scene (that is, in terms of “reputation”). Lesbianism, or female bi-sexuality, is significantly less socially problematic than teh ghey.

This may well be down to biology and power relationships. Due to the nature of the penetrative act, normal sexual relations (of the type Mr Clinton never had with interns) expresses a dominance/submission relationship in physical terms. Heterosexuals thus generally consider “normal” to be a body-submissive role for females and body-dominant role for males. This is one of the few things that Dworkin and the Radicals almost got right, but being a bunch of mad old baggages, they got all the conclusions about it wrong.

So anyway, girl-girl doesn’t violate this expected power relationship, whereas boy-boy does, since one of the boys has to take the female body-submissive role, thus ceasing to be, er, one of the boys. The fact that the dirtbox is involved only intensifies that effect, just as a girl taking it up the botty seems more submissive, which is why there’s a growing PC narrative against girls submitting to going brown on the basis of it being degrading. How the Feminists and the Gays are going to sort that one out (“alright for boys, not for girls”?) will be interesting to watch.

  8. Are there any full time old school, nothing but, heterosexuals left in the UK?

Yes. But we’re not news. It has to be said that JJ is only ‘news’ because of the tedious insistence of even the non-tabloid press in assuming we all have a prurient interest in the minutia of the lives of the not particularly famous.

Okay. Statistically, they have a point. I, like many more here, are statistical outliers. Which is why we’re commenting on a libertarian economics blog, rather than watching “zzz Factor” re-runs.

  9. john malpas – “Are there any full time old school, nothing but, heterosexuals left in the UK?”

Umm, if they were Old School, wouldn’t they be a bit, well, less than 100% heterosexual? You know, fagging, toasting crumpets and all that sort of thing? Or have I misunderstood the nature of Britain’s public school system?

The real question is why has Britain’s media fallen into the hands of a small number of people who are utterly unrepresentative of the majority of the population and hold their values in such contempt. Not merely left of the Labour Party and insistent on packing the Archers until it sounds like a Respect election rally, but also interested in anything except heterosexual intercourse.

  10. Ian B: that’s the traditional view, sure. But online fanfic features an awful lot of really quite hardcore and explicit man-on-man (well, more normally boy-on-boy) gay action, and is mostly written and read by teenage girls and middle-aged women.
