How goddam stupid do you have to be to do this?

So, we\’re subsidising the hell out of the installation of solar panels in order to stop Gaia from boiling.

Then we impose a tax on cheap solar panels that would stop Gaia from boiling.

The UK could lose billions of pounds and thousands of jobs in the solar industry if the EU imposes tariffs on cheap imported panels from China, a report has claimed.

The European commission is investigating if solar panels coming into Europe from China are being sold below market value – known as \”dumping\” – and benefiting from unfair Chinese government subsidies.

Look, if the Chinese taxpayer is being ripped off to make solar panels cheaper for Europeans then the correct response is to say, as a European, \”Ta, ta v. muchly, send me some more\”.

We\’re ruled by loons: imports are the benefit from trade and the cheaper they are the better.

  1. Tim,

Sorry, you’ve got it wrong. You are assuming that the politicians’ main aim is to grow the economy.

Firstly, even if this were one of their aims, they are going to be hampered by their actual main aim – re-election (in the EU context, re-election of the party which they were appointed to champion.)

Secondly, if they are of the socialist persuasion, then economic growth takes a distant back seat to either some abstract notion of ‘fairness’ which, in practice means making rich people poorer or some pre-Trotskyite idea of empowering the down-trodden worker.

If they are watermelons, then they basically just want to hug Gaia and anything to do with business is just nasty and should be abolished.

  2. “The UK could lose billions of pounds and thousands of jobs in the solar industry if the EU imposes tariffs on cheap imported panels from China, a report has claimed”

Huh? They may loses some in the installation business, but surely they would create jobs in the manufacture on panels as the price advantage of Chinese imports is wiped out…

  3. “The UK could lose…thousands of jobs in the solar industry”

Those jobs being of course a costs, a mal-employment of people doing things that actually make us poorer.

So losing those jobs would be a good thing.

As you’re no doubt sick of pointing out, Tim, otherwise you would have said it yet again.

  5. I bet there are loads of people with PhDs in economics who don’t understand the latter very simple sentence.

No. Everyone with a PhD or even a masters in economics understands this sentence perfectly well. The trouble is, people with (and indeed without) degrees in almost every other subject either don’t, or pretend not to in order to appease others who don’t.

  6. This could save us all a fortune.

If the panels increase in price and the feed-in tariffs don’t, nobody will install new solar panels.

Solar panels in the UK…… Even by the standards of the Greenies, that is astonishingly stupid.
