  1. It’s rare to see such a concise failure of logic. Normally there’s at least a word’s distance between the two contradictory elements.

  2. “NHS” is just a brand. Since 2006-ish more and more of the NHS in England has been run by what the law calls “public benefit corporations” and everyone else calls “foundation trusts”. They are independent bodies that provide NHS-branded services to the NHS under contract. They compete for contracts with each other, with charities and with ordinary companies. Stafford Hospital is locally run by Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust.

  3. So is that a good kind of choice? As opposed to the bad kinds of choices whereby people choose things Ritchie doesn’t agree with?

  4. If we go back to having hospitals run by local government or local charities, it’ll be Turning The Clock Back to 1946, and we couldn’t possibly allow that, could we?

  5. Local people supporting a killing hospital. Are these local people who work at the hospital or local people who have to use the hospital regardless?

  6. Sound like the local NHS workers invited the proeuthanasia lobby to swell the crowd. The alternative, that all the intelligent locals have left or been killed off, depresses me.

  7. Stafford Hospital was well-known in the “local” area as a deathtrap which was to be avoided if at all possible.

  8. “Since 2006-ish more and more of the NHS in England has been run by what the law calls “public benefit corporations” and everyone else calls “foundation trusts”.”

Since 1948-ish the LHS (“Local health Service”, if you will) in England has been run by what the law calls “independent contractors” and everyone else calls “doctors, dentists, opticians and chemists”.

Apart from the odd Dr H Shipman, it has worked reasonably well, then again he’s in jail whereas the numpties running Stafford got paid off.

  9. According to their accounts they’ve got 2,665 employees, at an average pay of £41k.

Not surprising that they manage “thousands” of protesters.

  10. “Apart from the odd Dr H Shipman, it has worked reasonably well, then again he’s in jail whereas the numpties running Stafford got paid off.”

Well, no. He’s dead. Shipman at least had the decency and depth of self-examination to top himself after he’d been found out. Murphy’s far too much of a narcissist to ever admit that if his brand of lunacy were ever fully implemented the death toll would make Shipman’s antics look like an amusing peccadillo. If bodies were stacked in the street he’d find a way to deflect blame.

  11. we used to have cottage hospitals sitting in local communities staffed by local nurses and treating local patients; they’ve mostly been closed down now because the treatment was poor and expensive, and they killed people
