  1. What’s this week’s summoning charm for lost_nurse?

No need – the jokes write themselves, e.g:

    the NHS reforms are working

    Hilarious.

  2. Yeah, time to come up with a sarcastic one liner like “as if”.

I have seen a more likely future for the NHS. And it starred Jenny Agutter and Peter Ustinov. For that matter I have seen a more plausible and more recent likely future for the NHS involving Korean clones and Tom Hanks.

Come to think of it, any random Charlton Heston film is more likely to be a plausible future than this one.

There are several reasons for that. The on-going fiscal incontinence of the government means that they have run out of money for all but their favourite clients. So the rest of us will have to pay, again, for anything we can be charged for. Heart transplants are obviously something we can pay for. This relies in a form of weakened Christian charity that is in decline. We are increasingly multicultural and there is plenty of evidence the welfare state cannot survive in a multi-racial society. On top of which, this requires some levels of competence. Which modern Britain is unable to sustain. You want to know what the future of Britain’s welfare state looks like, look to Rio.
