  1. A never ending source of comedy. Who needs Murphy Richards when you have the real thing.

  2. I had to see that for myself. Priceless.
But I detect a change in his tone lately. He is getting his arse handed to him on increasingly simple errors lately, and I think it has occurred to him that it is theoretically possible for him to be less than perfect on some trivial points.
Only very occasionally mind, but that’s a big change.

But in the world of his followers (Arnald, for example) it’s his critics here who are ‘getting their arse handed to them’ – he increasingly resembles the leader of some Waco-style cult which thinks the end of the world is nigh. I have to agree with a number of other commentators, poor Murphy Richards is increasingly lost – how can anyone satirize this idiocy?

  4. Thoroughly bad tactics for him to keep posting in areas where his expertise is nil. Even the brown-nosing hordes that infest his comments section must see that he’s an utter cretin here (as well as being his usual cvnt) and it undermines his credibility in the area in which he has some expertise – ie tax (don’t all jump on me at once here).

I guess it’s a good example of the Captain Mainwaring syndrome, where your self-perceived omnipotence makes you a Godhead (unfortunately only in your own postcode).

  5. A Compton points out in his comment on Murphy’s blog on the deficit, Murphy has managed to confuse Self-Assessment with self-employment.

I feel Murphy’s critics are getting too hung up on ‘facts’ and ‘the real world’ rather than accepting the delusional rantings and half-baked, half-witted thoughts as the Holy Gospel according to St Murphy as do his followers.

  6. Why all the bellyache about Murphy Richards? Anyone can see that Richard Murphy is a priceless, eloquent, dead-on poker-faced satire of the esteemed Mr Richards.

  7. His knowledge how’s no bounds! He is also a theologian as well. Oh and he asked me if I really had no sense of irony
I replied ‘Yes; “Richard Murphy, Tax Expert”‘. He hasn’t allowed me on since.

  8. Look, either link to the stuff he posts, or stop going on and on about him. I had no idea he existed until I started following this blog. Now I get endless stuff about him but never any link. I suspect he’s an idiot, but please either ignore or link.

  9. Ironman – you have to read the Andrew Dickie take on Murphy’s blog on GCHQ – even by the low standards of the sympathetic commentators there, it is priceless….

If he had not impinged upon your existence prior to reading here, you’ve been fortunate – and perhaps all of us on here should apologize for lifting the veil. Believe me I long for a world where his kind of out of date, profoundly illiberal ideologies are treated with the contempt they warrant.

Sadly, we know from history that if evil is not challenged, it will flourish – hence why forums like this, where countervailing ideas to his tyrannical bent are openly debated, with even the most moronic posters freely permitted to express themselves, with the aim of constantly exposing his totalitarian ideology to scrutiny, are so vital.

It is Tim’s policy not to directly link to his blog to limit people being inadvertently exposed to these harmful ideas, but if you google ‘Tax Research UK’ you get straight there.

  11. Andrew Dickie is the prize turnip of a fertile patch. His continued attempts at equivalence between our world and the state – Cum-prison that was Eastern Europe is jusy…sick

  12. It’s quite thought-provoking to consider the fact that no-one under the age of about 35 has any real recollection of what it was like when the Berlin Wall came down and even people now aged 40 were unlikely to have had any solid political understanding at the time. But even up to the DDR’s last gasp, there were those who bought into the fiction that it was on roughly the same footing as the FRG (that, or helped to maintain the fiction.) We now know of course that this was a lie, and a stupid lie, We know that East Germany was a pitiful shell maintained only by the intransigence of a few gerontocratic communists. The grey uniformity still appeals to a certain cast of people. I can quite easily see Murphy as a State functionary in the Ministry of This, that and the other, with petty and capricious power over people. He’d have made a good Stasi informant, because he’d have been unable to see that what he was doing was wicked. And we know, because he tells us, that he’d like to re-erect the Wall in the form of his passport tax.

  13. “These are not nominal numbers
    They are cash forecasts”

Actually, it sounds like something Joe Biden would say.
    Or John Kerry would say.
    Or Nancy Pelosi would say.

Of course, Barack Obama would claim he was unaware of it until he read it in the papers.

IIRC it goes back back a few years to when bloggers in general, and Murphy in particular, used to brag about their monthly traffic figures. Tim stopped linking to him so that he didn’t directly drive up Murphy’s figures. Also, there was the issue of Murphy getting better Google ratings by having more incoming links.

Try asking him by HOW MUCH spending needs to exceed taxes. You’ll find out pretty quick what a neoliberal you are; you won’t get an answer though

  16. His blog is becoming a Carry On farce. More from the comments:

Yet another individual, inevitably unidentified, willfully claiming superior knowledge without saying whence that superior knowledge emanates. Someone is very worried about your influence, Richard, and getting his or her mates to try to disrupt your activities.

    murphy

I agree: all these people who assure me of their vast experience without ever once providing any evidence as to why I wonder who pays them all?

Infamy, Infamy, they’ve all got it Infamy!

  17. Rather more embarrassing for Ritchie was this little interchange.

“Yet another individual, inevitably unidentified, willfully claiming superior knowledge without saying whence that superior knowledge emanates.”

Someone is very worried about your influence, Richard, and getting his or her mates to try to disrupt your activities.”

    Ritchie’s response:

“I agree: all these people who assure me of their vast experience without ever once providing any evidence as to why”

“I wonder who pays them all?”

Make no mistake, Ritchie is completely bats-in-the-belfry as well as evil. If he wasn’t also stupider than yoghurt, he’d be properly dangerous.

  18. Our Murph seems to have worked out his gig, though: when he makes a claim about economics and is challenged by an actual working economist, he retorts that it’s all political. Presumably, if he was challenged by a politician or political philosopher, he would claim that his point was economic. And the only people who call themselves “political economists” are Marxists (which is to say, neither).

  19. Look, it’s completely simple. Words and phrases do not take their common, normal meaning with Richie – their meaning is whatever it needs to be at the moment such that Richie is correct when challenged. And if you don’t grasp the truth of this, you are a neoliberal pedant who has had his arguments totally demolished, and who is in the pay of dark forces. Unlike him, who merely receives a 35k grant from Joseph Rowntree for being awesome and objectively correct at all times.

  20. Bit late I know, but this from wiki tells you all you need to now that RM is a twat:
Murphy has been widely praised by commentators on the left, being described by the Daily Mirror journalist, Kevin Maguire, as an “heroic figure” [16] and the Guardian journalist, Polly Toynbee, has called him a “tireless campaigne” Anyone praised by those two idiots…
