And today in the Guardian

Azalea has caught the ire of music critics, feminists and anti-racist activists of all kinds. They denounce her lyrics, alleged racist tweets and her “mimicry of sonic blackness”. They also argue that she displays, at best, an uncomfortable ignorance about the complexities of race issues. But what she represents is more complex than a white girl who doesn’t think before she speaks: actually, she is the inevitable product of neoliberal capitalism, and in some ways she is much a victim of it as a culprit.

No, really: before the dreadful neoliberals arrived with their capitalism we never did have pretty girls singing on stages. Nor any songs that appropriated the cultures of another nor even any racism. All of these things have only happened in the past 30-40 years that the neoliberals have been poisoning the minds of da youf.

She puts on an American accent when she raps because that’s what the vast majority of Australian musicians do when they sing – kind of like little kids who put on an American accent when they play pretend – because the world of the imagination in her country is dominated by US products.

As I recall it was only Ringo who sang in Liverpudlian. Those damn neoliberals, eh?

In 2012, female workers in the US were earning 77% that of their male counterparts. Non-Anglo women, however, were also more likely to be without health insurance; have higher mortality rates from diseases such as breast cancer; a higher occurrence of HIV; higher infant, fetal and perinatal mortality rates; and were far more likely to be the target of sexual assault — particularly if they are Native American. In Australia, the disparity between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians in the health system is only the beginning of the story.

Haranguing Azalea and over again for her thoughtlessness isn’t going to get us any closer to solving the root problems: the systemic inequality perpetuated by capitalism over colonised and marginalised peoples; the sexism entrenched in the capitalist process in which black women fare significantly worse than white women, and the particularly twisted cluster of exploitation in which a black man can make a fortune off a single-minded white woman taking pride in her own ignorance.

Australian leftists are even more mad than British ones. Discuss.

  1. A white girl who doesn’t think before she speaks! Are only black girls supposed to do that hen?

  2. and were far more likely to be the target of sexual assault — particularly if they are Native American.

And of course, that wouldn’t have anything to do with holding up noble savage ideals and excusing away behaviour found among minorities which would be rightly condemned if the rest of us did it.

  3. This is the kind of territory covered by David Thompsons blog.
One of his articles explored the Guardian “controversy” about white women with large arses (I think that was the gist of it–I was too busy laughing to follow it closely). It seems that having a large arse has been patented by black women and white females are copying in true waycist style.

    Further comment would be superfluous.

  4. There was a nice article recently on America’s GamersGate (a bunch of Social Justice Warriors sleeping with each other, puffing each other’s works and co-ordinating it all through a Journolist-type secret e-mail club, all the while expressing utter contempt for the ordinary teenage male who, you know, play games) which pointed out, in passing, that embracing this sort of mad leftist politics signals the death of the mainstream media. The Guardian cannot write this tripe and expect any normal person to pay for it.

  5. Oh, God, not the Left’s obsession with keeping everyone in their own musical ghetto again. I have actually heard this shit about Lenny Kravitz, believe it or not, whose success at making “white” music proves racism on the part of his fans for some reason.

Rock music is the sound of the school outcasts showing off to the bullies. Pop is the sound of the school geeks showing that they can be fun at parties now. R&B is the sound of the cool kids who can actually be quite fun to be around, even if they are wankers. Hip-hop in the Eighties was the sound of the social outcast mouthing off defiantly. Hip-hop now is the sound of the school bully shouting into your face about how much money he’s got and how he’s going to spend it all on crack whores. Sad.

  6. If you scroll down to the comments, even longstanding Guardian readers are getting tired of this shit.

Not tired enough to avoid clicking on the clickbait though – I can’t blame them, I find this stuff morbidly fascinating too – and that’s the Guardian’s new business model.

The Daily Mail’s online presence is the reigning champion of clickbait journalism, while the Daily Telegraph (which is now all about trolling UKIP supporters for hits) and the Guardian (Gawker/Buzzfeed-style social justice warrior rage exploitation) are scrambling to catch up.

  7. You’re right about the comments under the Graun piece

    Sample

    >Young woman vexes hair-trigger discrimination-sniffers pursuivants. “She’s stolen our style, she don’t respect the traditions, she’s even stolen our ASS!”

And on that day not a single shit was given.<

    Almost poetry

  8. Also – and at risk of arousing DBC Spacebar from his 1950s slumber, and prodding Paul B.oring* into delivering unto us another of his Pious and Sanctified Lectures on Everything – if we’re taking this remotely seriously, aren’t ‘black’ musicians ‘stealing’ (largely if not wholly) ‘white’ technology to produce their ‘music’ and get it out there?

*Speech quotes inserted to allow for multitude of descriptional sins.

  9. When the pasty-hued do something that attracts a smaller proportion of their more melanin-blessed peers than simple-minded statistics would predict, it’s “exclusionary” and they should jolly well be ashamed of themselves. If, on the other hand, they do something in an arena that hitherto attracted predominantly non-honky participants, they’re guilty of “cultural appropriation” and are just beastly. This is why it is important to use every available opportunity to tell the Social Justice Warriors to get tae fuck.

  10. And genetic predisposition (or lesser resistance for genetic reasons) to breast cancer is down to capitalism?
HIV? The scientific community is sufficiently certain that HIV resulted from individuals in a non-capitalist society eating chimpanzees infected by SIV that no-one has produced an alternative theory.
Also the Grauniad mistyped “sexism” when it meant “racism” – “the sexism entrenched in the capitalist process in which black women fare significantly worse than white women”
There is nothing inherently sexist about capitalism – if you buy shares in a company, the company doesn’t care whether you are male or female (nor does it care whether you are black or white or yellow or brown, except in South Africa).
Just as IHT is an optional tax HIV is an optional disease – apart from haemophiliacs and a few hospital patients given transfusions of infected blood – like any other STD. Since most STDs (and prostitution) predate capitalism, even the Grauniad has not tried to blame other venereal diseases on capitalism.

  11. Of course, Australia is the best bloody country in the world. Even our leftists are funnier.

“and the particularly twisted cluster of exploitation in which a black man can make a fortune off a single-minded white woman taking pride in her own ignorance. ”

I love this ending. It doesn’t matter what happens, someone’s being exploited, ok? Better yet, they’re all being exploited. We’re all victims!

  12. john77 – “if you buy shares in a company, the company doesn’t care whether you are male or female (nor does it care whether you are black or white or yellow or brown, except in South Africa).”

And in Malaysia. You start a listed company in Malaysia and you have to sell a percentage of shares to bumiputeras.

“Since most STDs (and prostitution) predate capitalism, even the Grauniad has not tried to blame other venereal diseases on capitalism.”

Don’t tell the Guardian that syphilis came back with Columbus and his merry men. They will blame it on Western Imperialism.

  13. Pendant that I am, I can’t help this.

“Azalea – real name is Amethyst Amelia Kelly – spent her formative years in a small town called Mullumbimby in the 1990s and early 2000s. Back then, hip-hop is ubiquitous in pop culture and she loves it”

Is? Can we stick to one tense in discussing past events please?

    “She thinks to herself”

By the next paragraph we’re back to past tense. Thank goodness.

“Young Azalea probably thinks she’s more accepting than most, particularly given her ongoing enthusiasm for a predominantly black musical style, and when she raps for her friends and they laugh at her and tell her she sucks, maybe even that rap music sucks, who’s the racist then, huh?”

Where did this come from? Oh, probably, I see. Journalists used to do this old fashioned thing called getting quotes.

“the explicit insistence that xenophobic proposals were not racist”

Petitio principii, or begging the question. The assumption that the proposals were xenophobic proves racism.

“and run away from home, literally,”

Thanks for the clarification. I thought you meant figuratively.

“Haranguing Azalea and over again for her thoughtlessness”

Can we have an editor please?

  14. @:SMFS
There are arguments about whether there was a strain of syphilis in Europe before Columbus, but there can be no doubt that gonorrhea in Europe and syphilis in America predated capitalism.
Apologies for forgetting Malaysia: it hasn’t been a significant problem for more than a score of years.
