Kill, Kill, KILL!

A Mexican restaurant has been banned from handing out free sombreros to students because the publicity stunt was branded ‘racist’ by university officials.
Pedro’s Tex-Mex Cantina, a Norwich restaurant, gave the hats to University of East Anglia students at a freshers’ fair in the city in a bid to drum up business from the student population.
But officials at the students’ union, where the fair was held last week, took the sombreros from students and ordered the restaurant to stop giving them out because they thought it was offensive for non-Mexicans to wear them.

The union said it breached an advertising policy sent to stallholders, which said: ‘Discriminatory or stereotypical language or imagery aimed towards any group or individual based on characteristics will not be permitted as part of our advertising.’
The policy specifies 15 types of discrimination, some of which include colour, ethnic origin, and nationality.
The union said the sombreros were seen as racist and a form of ‘cultural appropriation’.

Note that officials in a student union are drawn from those who have actually had some education at that institution. Thus the University of East Anglia would appear to need a cull among the faculty who have taught these people this.

Cultural appropriation of a sodding hat?

  1. ‘The union said the sombreros were seen as racist’ wow, nice phrasing.

Although, the Racist Sombreros is an awesome name for a band.

  2. But officials at the students’ union, where the fair was held last week, took the sombreros from students

    Isn’t that theft?

Yes I know socialism is no stranger to state-sanctioned theft, but these cunts are still operating under British law.

  3. It all started when they changed rag week to community action week. So what was so wrong about hanging a car from the tyne bridge?

  4. >Thus the University of East Anglia would appear to need a cull among the faculty who have taught these people this.

Well, you know who it is. The sociology department. It’s all been downhill since Universities started teaching Sociology.

But of course many of these student union officials come into Uni with these views already, which they have received from left-wing parents and The Guardian.

  5. Tim and the above commentators clearly don’t have a clue about the basic rules of political correctness. One rule is that waycism perpetrated by people with brown skin is OK, but waycism by people with white skin is pure evil.

So it all hinges on whether the owner of the restaurant was a real (brown skinned) Mexican or a white skinned Anglo-Saxon.

  6. ex America semper aliquid novi

It’s striking that racism against Mexicans is not a huge issue in this country, for the babyishly simple reason that there are very few Mexicans. But it is an issue in America. And American progs have no qualms at all about forcing their poorly though-out views on the rest of the world. It’s basically cultural imperialism, really.

Out of interest, would they have confiscated Panama hats?

  7. “But officials at the students’ union, where the fair was held last week, took the sombreros from students ”

I’d be interested in seeing what legal authorisation the NUS blackshirts have from the State to act in the capacity of police officers.

  8. It’s weird, the way these idiots have lost sight of the fact that racism is supposed to negative. Speedy Gonzales is apparently racist now, to the extent that Warner Bros DVDs have a trigger warning at the start. This is insane. Speedy is the good guy, he helps the poor, he’s nice to everyone, he fights bad guys who are almost always stupid spiteful vain American gringos… but we’re supposed to be outraged because he wears a sombrero and says “Ariba!”?

  9. All cultures that have contact with each other appropriate features of other cultures, which makes the ‘cultural appropriation’ tag particularly silly. Tea-drinking, hashish, potatoes, suits and ties, curry, ‘nigga’ patois…the list is endless.

  10. “But officials at the students’ union, where the fair was held last week, took the sombreros from students…”

Like everyone else, this is the most puzzling thing. Did no-one say ‘No’ at all? What’s happened to students that they meekly submit to theft?

  11. There’s something I truly do not understand. If someone had attempted to deprive my early 20’s incarnation of a freebee titfa,, they’d have been searching for a good dentist. I can vaguely remember these sort of pocket fascists. But only as sport. Fox hunting without the fancy dress requirement.
What the hell’s happened to yoof? Do they have no pointless gratuitous violence at all these days?

  12. Regarding why they let them take the hats, I suspect it might be more the fact that refusal would have led to a ban from the union, which is where the cheap booze is and all their friends will go out for the rest of the year. In their shoes I’d let the fascists have the free hat rather than suffer the ban, purely for convenience sake as I doubt I’d have felt that strongly on the matter to make a principled fuss.

    But just a guess.

  13. Perhaps we need a smartphone app where you can I put your details such as hight weight, bmi, ethnicity, social and educational background and the app will calculate the sort of clothing you can wear with out appearing to be racist, sexist and generally inconsiderate and offensive.

The odd thing is that isn’t this creating a new cast system were each person belongs to a certain cast and has to dress and behave in accordance to their cast? If a person tries to dress and behave outside their cast, then you will be attacked (but never physically) for trying to change your cast.

  14. If black/brown people start ‘acting white’ then it’s cultural imperialism. “Bad white people”

If white people start ‘acting black/brown’ it’s cultural appropriation. “Bad white people”.

If white people act white then photos are taken and put on line mocking them. “Stupid white people”

  15. Tommy Cooper’s trademark fez was clearly an act of racist cultural appropriation of proud North African Islamic culture and therefore he must never feature on TV ever again. WE ARE ALL GUILTY

  16. Actually, the union did absolutely the right thing.

If you let standards slip, the next thing you know is some grammar school bounder wearing a Harrow tie!

  17. We will know the situation is bad when a person wearing a fez is given an asbo (or whatever they are called these days) and told to attend a SJW cultural awareness course held in a ‘retreat’ in the Highlands of Scotland, where they will be lectured by a gang of SJWs wearing Che t shirts, berets and Doc Martins, given organic porridge to eat and taken to a quarry to break rocks with a hammer in order to instill a sense of international solidarity into them.

A little far fetched I know, but I do not think it is too early for satire.

  18. Bloke in North Dorset

“I’d be interested in seeing what legal authorisation the NUS blackshirts have from the State to act in the capacity of police officers.”

I think the authorities have given up for fear of offending people, a bit like they did with mosques and lefty councils in London a few years ago and look where that got us.

  19. The authorities are often quite happy to offend people. It’s people who can organise a mob to put bricks through their windows that they tend to avoid ‘offending’.

  20. ‘Discriminatory or stereotypical language or imagery aimed towards any group or individual based on characteristics will not be permitted as part of our advertising.’

How is a Mexican restaurant allowed?

  21. It is curious. These SJW types are a tiny, otherwise, insignificant minority. Few of them’d say boo to a goose. Yet the majority become supine in front of them. There’s a lot to be said for the jagged half brick of democracy, democratically wielded.

  22. “But officials at the students’ union, where the fair was held last week, took the sombreros from students”

This is the puzzling bit. If anyone tried to take my sombrero he –or she-would have got a punch in the face. Well perhaps the female might have got a backhander across her chops—I’m a bit old fashioned but these “students” just allow themselves to be publicly humiliated by leftist cunts?. Unless they had half of the fucking UAF’s fighting strength backing them up. And then it should go in “Accounts Receivable”.

    “Vain, mightiest fleets, of iron fram’d;
    Vain, those all-shattering guns;
    Unless proud England keep, untam’d,
The strong heart of her sons. ”

    Hah, hah fucking hah.

  23. Like everyone else, this is the most puzzling thing. Did no-one say ‘No’ at all? What’s happened to students that they meekly submit to theft?

I would assume they didn’t say anything for the same reason people didn’t say they would vote for the Tories or UKIP in the last election. If you do say anything you get a wall of abuse from the usual suspects up to and including violence. Better to keep quiet, point out the stupid idiots doing this sort of thing as subtly as possible, and hope that the rest of society finally decides to stand up to these SJW thugs.

  24. So Much For Subtlety

The cartoons you are about to see are products of their time. They may depict some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that were commonplace in American society. These depictions were false then and are still false today.

It was a racist stereotype that Mexican mice are extremely fast? Willing to help others? Concerned for the poor? Graceful towards pretty Senorita Mice?

I *wish* my own ethnic group was stereotyped in such a way.

  25. So Much For Subtlety

I don’t know about these Social Justice types. But on the other hand I am tempted to picket a Jazz Bar. The drums are sort of African. The guitars Mexican. The brass mainly via French Louisiana.

Clearly there is absolutely no one who is entitled to play it.

  26. So did these SJW go around removing the Keffiyeh from all those people misappropriating the culture of Palestinians?

  27. Mr Weevil seems to nail it

“Better to keep quiet………. and hope that the rest of society finally decides to stand up to these SJW thugs.”

If we’re all going to stand around waiting for the rest of society………… we find we haven’t got a society to stand around & wait for.

  28. The case for bringing Jihadi John over and testing the ‘tolerance’ of these individuals becomes stronger by the day – he should be put into UEA and encouraged to make videos incognito – preferably with the ‘officials’ who confiscated the Sombreros as his first co-stars…..

  29. “Discriminatory or stereotypical…”

Discriminatory? Perhaps. But stereotypical? Stereotypes help us navigate the social world. Without them, we’d be lost. Most work, up to a point. You simply can’t judge everyone as an individual, without preconceptions. The only problem with stereotypes is when you can no longer look beyond them. For example…in my local pharmacy, there is a goth girl with facial tattoos and piercings: her appearance is repellent to me, but she’s charming and efficient.

  30. As mining students, other than rugby, our favourite sport was baiting SJWs, we used to attend lefty gatherings so we could heckle and abuse the twats, though not if there was not a bar nearby.

Why is it racist for non-Mexicans to wear sombreros but not racist for them to eat Mexican food?

  31. This from the UEA Students’ Union policies:

    Women’s Caucus
3.5 There shall be a Women’s caucus which shall include as members all students who identify as Women

  32. When I was at school, one of the brighter girls said she was going to apply to East Anglia rather than the expected Oxford or Cambridge. There were hushed meetings, her parents were called in, it was all very solemn. She claimed EA was better for modern languages; whether this was the case I know not. She’d have walked into Oxbridge (really very, very clever) so it wasn’t out of any anxiety at academic standards.

  33. First they came for the sombreros, but I was not a Mexican.
Then they came for the slouch hats, but I was not Australian.
Then they came for the Glengarry bonnets, but I was not Scots.
Then they came for the stovepipe hats, but I was not Welsh.
Then they came for the fez, just like that, but I was not Tommy Cooper.
Finally they came for the bowlers, but I was Patrick Macnee and
    bopped them with it.

  34. A hat? Offensive? To whom? To anyone else but the “officials at the student union”?

Then there’s this: would faked weather data be offensive?

I mean, this is the University of East Anglia, right?

  35. Campaigns and Democracy officer Chris Jarvis said: ‘We know that when it comes to cultural appropriation the issues can sometimes be difficult to understand”

That’s because you make it up as you go along mate.

“many don’t realise that they may be about to cause offence or break a policy.”

Think he has ‘realise’ mixed up with ‘give a fuck’ there.

I think a good test these twats could make before banning something like this is think: Would we be offended if an English restaurant in Mexico handed out bowler hats for fun?

  36. There’s something I truly do not understand. If someone had attempted to deprive my early 20’s incarnation of a freebee titfa,, they’d have been searching for a good dentist.

At which point, they’d call the police, get you arrested and charged with some kind of ‘hate crime’. If you didn’t go to jail, you’d end up with a criminal record that would block you from many careers for the rest of your life and prevent you from traveling to many countries.

This is the Western ‘Cultural Revolution’. The left have spent decades taking over the institutions of Western government. Everyone in a position of power is going to back them up against you.

  37. I think a good test these twats could make before banning something like this is think: Would we be offended if an English restaurant in Mexico handed out bowler hats for fun?

You need to stop believing this is anything to do with ‘racism’. The left couldn’t care less about ‘racism’, it’s just a convenient tool to attack Western culture.

The left’s goal is to demoralize and destroy the West so the Red Army can roll into Europe and America unopposed. Unfortunately, no-one told them the USSR collapsed twenty years ago.

  38. Edward,

    > The left’s goal is to demoralize and destroy the West so the Red Army can roll into Europe and America unopposed. Unfortunately, no-one told them the USSR collapsed twenty years ago.

No, it’s worse than that. The Left’s goal was to undermine our side during the Cold War. But the New Left have been raised on what were merely tactical positions and actually believe them.

  39. Oh dear, another moral dilemma. Do I have to burn my baseball cap. Would it be patronising to make it a gift to a real non-native American?
