Bit weak really

Harvard University, America’s oldest and most prestigious higher education establishment, is to stop calling heads of its halls of residence “house masters” because of perceived slavery connotations.
The move comes in response to student complaints and means staff in charge of dormitories will now be referred to as faculty deans. The change will come into effect immediately, the Harvard Crimson student newspaper reported.
Michael Smith, the dean of Harvard’s arts and sciences, explained the name change in a statement that denied any connection between the previous job title and slavery.
“Titles can and should change when such a change serves our mission,” he wrote. “I want to emphasise that a decision to change does not necessarily mean that what came before was wrong. I have not been shown any direct connection between the term House Master and the institution of slavery.”

You’re wrong, we know you’re wrong, you can see you’re wrong but we’ll give in anyway for the sake of an easy life.

This is how that moron from yesterday gets to claim that Cleopatra was black African.

  1. Hard hat one but I do agree on this. The do house masters have to be called master? Couldn’t house head or similar do just as good a job.

For lots of American blacks the term master is loaded with connotations of slavery so what is wrong with showing some sensitivity? Changing a name isn’t special treatment.

Of course we could call children with Down Syndrome Mongoloid.

  2. For lots of American blacks the term master is loaded with connotations of slavery so what is wrong with showing some sensitivity?

So wouldn’t it better to take on the race hustlers, and at least attempt to win? Help up the few black students at Harvard by removing the massive chips on their shoulders placed there by the race grievance industry and their cheerleaders?

  3. I’ll be the first to commiserate with any modern day African American Harvard students who have been held in slavery on a southern US plantation, but I don’t think there are any.

  4. Calling the dudes who wave their batons around at the front of orchestras “conductors” is classist, derogatory and should be stopped, as it connotes the downtrodden clippies on old buses.

  5. “For lots of American blacks the term master is loaded with connotations of slavery so what is wrong with showing some sensitivity? “

Splendid idea! Let’s do away with ‘master copy’ too. And ‘master and slave’ computer settings.

Or they could just grow up?

  6. Maitre’D will also have to go then. In case any blacks visiting upmarket hotels, clubs etc mistake their surroundings for a plantation.

Yet it isn’t the majority of blacks pushing this shite. Yes there are a few black race hustlers like yesterdays numb-nutted scumbag but most of the word-salad sewage are white middle-class Marxist red guards.

    Purge all Unis–now.

  7. If Harvard had any balls they’d have announced that they were giving up undergraduate teaching and becoming an all-graduate university. More trouble than they’re worth.

  8. Ok, How about this though experiment. Most prestigious college in country was set up by Germans in 1920s and refers to House Fuehrer. Since then lots of Jewish students have started attending. Are they unreasonable to ask for the position’s name to be changed?

I have little sympathy with the current micro aggressions wailings but just because someone is wrong 99% of the time doesn’t mean we should be boorish reactionaries when they have one sensible one.

  9. DevonChap: “…just because someone is wrong 99% of the time doesn’t mean we should be boorish reactionaries when they have one sensible one.”

Indeed. Let me know when that sensible one materialises, ‘cos this ain’t it.

  10. Devon Chap, just how many people who attend Harvard imagine that they are picking cotton as slaves on a plantation? If they study for a Master’s degree are they condoning slavery? If the term was House Massa, maybe they would have a point. But it isn’t and they don’t.

  11. Devonchap–There is no end to this bullshit. Fuehrer means leader–so is that word to be banned for all time? Do the Germans need a new word now for fuck sake?

The swastika was a symbol of good in Buddhism for a millennia and a half before Adolf knobbled it. Should Buddhists drop it now?

    Sorry–bollocks.

  12. The US and various UK bridge (the game) associations have a Master points system and players gain ranks such as Master, Premier Master, Grand Master etc.

  13. A car driver in German is a “Führer”. A driving license in DE is “Führerausweis” and “Führerschein” in CH.

Someone who heads a company is a “Geschäftsführer”.

It’s only “Der Führer” that is loaded in any way.

  14. While I don’t know what the crazies think but I’m not suggesting we ban the word master. Just consider the context.

To a group of young black people whose sense of proportion hasn’t fully developed yet, an older white person saying “I am your master” had pretty bad connotations. telling them you are a chess Grand Master doesn’t since it isn’t the black people you are implying mastery over.

An Indian firm that was selling to Jews would remove swastikas from their packaging pretty sharpish. But no Israeli wants temples in India to chip off swastikas. Context.

We are the adults here, stamping our feet and shouting NO! undermines that.

  15. “Post grads have a much stronger tendency to stay in academia.” No; you’re thinking of PhD students. Harvard is packed with medics, lawyers, and MBA students.

  16. The only people saying “I am your Master” would likely be in Black Magic movies or S&M films. Any teacher introducing himself to his students by striding into the room and intoning “I am your Master” would probably find the next 12 months rather difficult by reason of endless piss-taking never mind racial nonsense. In any sane type of school concerned with learning. Rather than a hothouse for Red Guards.

“Good Day–I am your House Master for this year”. You would have to be pathological to take offence at that.

    Oh…

In fact House Master sounds like a name for a Hoover.

  17. DevonChap: “To a group of young black people whose sense of proportion hasn’t fully developed yet…”

I think you’re too kind by assuming this isn’t driven by dogma, but assuming this to be true, an explanation would help them to develop that sense of proportion.

    Caving into them won’t.

  18. Our gracious host recently had an post on how we shouldn’t remove the N word from Huck Finn since it taught us why it is wrong to use that term.

If not offending people isn’t a reason to stop using a phrase then why can’t we use the N word? If the janitor in the halls of residence was called ‘the house n-gger’ would Harvard be right to change it? Or should they just say it was traditional.

Like it or loath it but the word Master is linked to Slave and when dealing with some hyper-sensitive people it is probably best not to use it in context of one person in charge of a group.

Adding the prefix ‘house’ doesn’t help much when ‘house boy’ is also a phrase loaded with slavery contexts.

  19. DevonChap, the 13th amendment was ratified on 6th December 1865. It’s about time the little snowflakes got over themselves instead of harking back to a bygone age.

  20. Devon Chap—-You are trying to defend a lost position. Master is an ordinary word and any socialistic puke or race-baiting nutter who thinks English is going to be carved up on the say so of socialistic scum can piss up his/her leg and play with the steam.

Not only do Uni’s need purging of scum-left teachers and Red Guard vermin students, they also need to be purged of the crawling curs who kowtow to the leftstench. Same terms of departure–zero compensation/pension confiscated.

It might give the admin clowns a little backbone.

  21. It seems to me to be ordinary good manners to change the name if it bothers people.

Are you entirely indifferent to the history of your ancestors, in the 19th century and before? If not, why should you demand something different from African Americans?

  22. SJW–More bullshit.

This PC linguistic crap is the expression of politically motivated hatred and telling the whiners to fuck off is anti-leftism coming right back at you. The scum of the left push to gain any power they can. Any concession brings more demands and more deceitful apologists like you trying to cover their poison with a layer of bullshit.

Politeness? To peddlers of leftist hated?

Er…No–they can fuck off. Expulsion and a 10 fold surcharge on their student loans is what these Red Guard scum deserve. And worse. A suitable reward for signing on with evil at a tender age.

  23. Devonchap

If the eg Alpha Beta Phi Kappa student residence at Harvard was the residence of black students only, then I could see a possibility that a House Master could be seen to be offensive if only the head of that residence had that title.

I’m assuming that Harvard residences are mixed (to be otherwise would presumably be racist).

The House master is therefore master of all the residents, only some of whom will be black.

This is PC bullshit and capitulation of a high scale of self-flagellation and your argument and justification is facile bullshit on an even higher level than the Cecil Rhodes statue removal movement.

  24. In an English Public School every boarding house has a House Master (or Mistress in Girls’ Schools) who is responsible for the safety, conduct etc of the boys in his charge.
Harvard’s use of the title “House Master” for those in charge of dormitories may or may not be directly derived from the English usage but is certainly closely related in function.
Why should anyone assume that it has anything to do with slavery? [Excluding a few Public Schoolboys with bad memories]

  25. DevonChap

To a group of young black people whose sense of proportion hasn’t fully developed yet

    Understatement of the century.

    Social Justice Warrior

It seems to me to be ordinary good manners to change the name if it bothers people.

Can you change the name you post with? It bothers me.

  26. I demand that all males called Mohammed (and spelling derivations of it) rename themselves. It is offensive to Christians and Europeans past and present who have suffered at the hands of Islam, women who have suffered sexual and societal abuse under Islam and children who suffered sexual abuse from the one true prophet and those who practised and continue to practise his religion.

  27. The fact is that simply changing a very terms like house master does nothing to address the cause of racism. Everyone, no matter how liberal they claim to be, has prejudices. The name change is only symbolic and sweeps the real issue under the rug.

One way to determine which ethnic groups your are prejudiced against is to review who you have asked out on a date when you know their appearance. While I have dated white, black, and hispanic women I have never dated an asian nor have I attempted to. This is not due to a lack of access. I personally have not met an asian woman that I found sufficiently attractive enough to date. It makes no difference if I use the PD term asian or a slur like slant eyes. My personal bias will remain no matter what words I use to describe the situation.

  28. Like it or loath it but the word Master is linked to Slave

Utter bollocks, as numerous people keep pointing out to you the word has plenty of other more common meanings, the whole thing is a typical example of a first world problem.

Since you seem so concerned perhaps I could have the benefit of your wisdom on a similar piece of nomenclature. On the allotment site where I have a plot the three supervisors are called Overseers, a term that has been in use since the allotments were established around as century ago. There’s a name with similar plantation like overtones, should we change it in case any black tenants have a nervous breakdown or are forced to flee to the North ?

  29. @ Liberal Yank
That criterion is only available to those verging on the promiscuous. Having dated fewer women than there are major racial groups (and been married for over 30 years), it just doesn’t work for me.

  30. calling them “Faculty Deans” is surely going to offend Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Jews and Muslims, as well as Zoroastrians and nonconformist Christian denominations.

They should just be called House Boss.

  31. “I have never dated an asian nor have I attempted to. This is not due to a lack of access. I personally have not met an asian woman that I found sufficiently attractive enough to date.”

LY:You have never found an Asian woman (–presume you mean Asian in the American sense–what we would call Far Eastern-Chinese etc) you wanted to date –and this makes you a racist?

Even you can’t really believe that.

  32. It seems I needed to make the it clear that a date doesn’t mean sex or a long term relationship. During times when I was single growing up I didn’t hesitate to meet new women. None of them were Japanese, Chinese, Korea, Filipino or Vietnamese. Looking back I realize that I do have a prejudice against dating them. I hoped no one believed I claimed to be perfect.

As a child Chinese, Japanese, dirty knees, look at these was a popular slur. To deny it’s use would be to deny the fact that it happened and hence the reasons it was wrong to do. Even worse were to be to take a word that is used in multiple connotations like knees and ban it because the word was used to suggest these women were only good for blow jobs. Similarly discontinuing the word master simply because of it’s use in a completely different context does nothing to solve the root causes of prejudice, racism, bigotry, or whatever word you happen to want to use.

My apologies that my far to brief initial comment allowed some readers to imagine far more convoluted scenarios than my mind would normally consider.

  33. Harvard.

The place where someone with the intellectual horsepower of Matt Yglesias can graduate with honors…

And just to give an idea of Matt Yglesias’ intellectual horsepower, he’s now in his ’30s and has just this week discovered that Evelyn Waugh was a man.

I graduated from Miami fucking University and had read Evelyn Waugh before my junior year. And I was a goddamn economics major.

Harvard is only prestigious to those who don’t know any better. East Coasters and mainstream media types, mostly.

  34. Thornavis. I bet if you played word association with 10 random people at least one would say ‘slave’ to ‘master’.

The point isn’t whether these people are right, I don’t think they are, but whether it is worth upsetting them just to keep a particular form of words.

  35. Devonchap – “For lots of American blacks the term master is loaded with connotations of slavery so what is wrong with showing some sensitivity? Changing a name isn’t special treatment.”

There is no evidence anyone gives a sh!t about this name at all. Or has ever heard of it.

But you fail the understand the situation. Suppose you go to prison. And a fellow inmate tells you you can’t sit on that chair. Now if it turns out that is reserved for guards, you may appreciate being told. But if he means that it is only for him and his friends, then you are being tested. They want to know if you will end up being someone’s prison b!tch or not. So what do you do? Learn to love Bubba?

When Martin Luther King generally suggested that we should not use the N word, I think we all agreed that was a matter of politeness. When Samuel L. Jackson suggests we should not use the N word, that is making you his prison b!tch. It is up to you whether you want to be his b!tch or not, but I don’t think it is a major moral issue.

In the same way this is a clash of wills with Harvard. Which a small group of activists will win. Harvard wants to bend over and hope they will use some lubrication. They won’t. But why should we go along with this? If it is not this word, it will be another word. They will start in on the tacos in the cafeteria in the end. Why should we give in time and time again when there is no sane justification and no sensible end game? Do you just want to be everyone’s b!tch?

F*ck them and the horse they rode into town on. If they don’t like Harvard, expel them.

  36. Devonchap

Well if we are reduced to playing word association and pandering to the terminally outraged to determine our response to made up moral panics then we’re in even bigger trouble as a society than I thought.

  37. Webmaster
    Masterful
    To master a skill
    Station master
    Master chef
    Form master

    Grow up you bugg*rs!!

It is clearly from school usage
Nowt to do with slavery except in the mind of a professional offence taker

What do they do with white boards? Do they still have blackboards?

Can’t believe I’m bothering to tap this out on the phone. Biggest load of cr*p this week

  38. Slaves on US plantations were either house slaves or field slaves. So I suppose a house master was, or at least sounds as if it was, a slave master in charge of house slaves. It’s more evocative than just ‘master’ in isolation.

Can you change the name you post with? It bothers me.
No. If you find the idea of a just society offensive, then I want to offend you.

I demand that all males called Mohammed (and spelling derivations of it) rename themselves. It is offensive to [people harmed by Islam].
I suppose that males called Mohammed are likely to abandon the name if they believe Islam to be malign. And not if they don’t.

The difference is that Harvard agrees with the protestors that slavery was bad.

  39. “Can you change the name you post with? It bothers me.
No. If you find the idea of a just society offensive, then I want to offend you.”

    Right back at you matey.

If you find the idea of socialistic tyranny ordered up by snotnose teenpunk leftists acceptable then I want a just society in which the young sewage are expelled and any student loans they have surcharged to 10 times the original amount. Just to ensure that these junior supporters of mass murder and dictatorship are ruined for life from their teenage years on.

  40. @ SJW
The title “Housemaster” has nothing to do with slavery. I’ve already told you its nature. So why are you rabbiting on about invented back-derivations?
