First thing a Czech would say on reading this story – Gyppoes

Not that they actually use the work Gyppoes of course, they’re ruder than that. The contempt which can be packed into the word Cikán is wondrous to behold and there are worse synonyms.

Czech ‘godmother’, 36, and her family trafficked eight men into the UK and treated them as slaves, taking their wages, forcing them to sleep in a garage and forage in bins for food
Five members of a Czech family trafficked Eastern Europeans into Britain
Gang pocketed their wages and benefits while they treated men as ‘slaves’
Forced them to sleep in cupboards and forage for leftover food in bins
‘Godmother’ Ruzena Tancosova and ‘enforcer’ Petr Tancos got six years
Martin Tancos got three years and his partner Katerina Kuriova got two
Petr’s partner Nela Dzurkova got 30 months at Plymouth Crown Court

Here it is, nine paragraphs down:

The Roma family

  1. This is the problem, isn’t it? When persecution of the Roma is ubiquitous across any country’s got Roma, you do have to wonder whether persecution’s a valid response to having Roma

  2. BiS-
yes well, persecution not the same thing as having the verbal freedom to express your prejudices, but i see your point, nasty people coming over here because people have been nasty to them.

  3. “This is the problem, isn’t it? When persecution of the Roma is ubiquitous across any country’s got Roma, you do have to wonder whether persecution’s a valid response to having Roma”

    But stereotypes are wrong!

” That stereotype accuracy — the correspondence of stereotype beliefs with criteria — is one of the largest relationships in all of social psychology.”

  4. LJH-
    TLDR – no

HB “persecution not the same thing as having the verbal freedom to express your prejudices.”
My take on Tim W’s post was it was a cultural observation (a word) and a comparison. Czechs down the pub versus british national publication.

BIS says persecution against Gypsies could well be the cause not the effect of their bad behaviour. He’s saying he’s not in total agreement with Czechs down the pub.

I recognised Tim’s and BiS’s point. i don’t know the answer – if you do, be Tim’s guest

  5. The Roma were uniformly reviled by all my Hungarian colleagues when I was working in Budapest. Their tendency to shit almost everywhere probably didn’t help.

I will make one observation – they are probably – to my taste – the ugliest race I have come across.

My brother in law lost a packet to them on several sessions at the shell game (find the ball in the three cups) when he visited on holiday despite us trying to drag him away.

  6. Yes, he is, Hallowed.

And with damned good reason. As anyone with any knowledge of this issue, anyone who has had the misfortune to deal with this ‘culture’ in any way will tell you.

  7. A more gentle take on the Roma might be had by reading Martin Cruz Smith’s (he of Gorky Park etc) Canto For A Gypsy.

IIRC a cultural stumbling block for the rest of us is that (he suggests) Roma culture essentially doesn’t accord fully human status to non-Roma (this is like many aboriginal tribes in Oz). So strict standards are (largely) observed and enforced in relations between Roma, but non-Roma are fair game/easy marks/suckers.
    Don’t know if it’s true but…

  8. Tell you what guys, in all the comments you’ve left replace “Roma” or “Gypsy” with “Jews” and see whether you feel the same then.

I’m not saying that the Roma aren’t problematic, but lets maintain a sense of proportion about dealing with the problems their culture causes to Western sensibilities.

  9. JG

I don’t believe you’ll find many Jews living in the streets around Marble Arch and shitting on doorsteps nearby. In a sane polity “deaing with the problems their culture causes” would entail forcing them to clear up the mess they create, then slinging them out of the country and not letting them back in: or better, not allowing them in to start with.

  10. John Galt,

“Tell you what guys, in all the comments you’ve left replace “Roma” or “Gypsy” with “Jews” and see whether you feel the same then.”

I’ve never had a Jew offer to sell me “lucky heather” outside a racecourse and then tell me to “fuck off” when I politely declined.

I’ve never had a Jew turn up on a well tended park in their caravans, leave a mess when they went 2 days later (although they took some newly planted trees).

I’ve never seen Jews in town selling daffodils and only daffodils in poorly wrapped bunches (what do councils plant by the roadsides?).

There’s not much theft of farm machinery in Wiltshire by Jews. No-one starts thinking of what action to take if they see a few caravans driving around with menorahs in the back window.

There’s no race thing here. The DNA of “Roma” in the UK has been studied and it’s basically “Irish”. It’s indistinguishable from Irish DNA. They’re just Irish people who live a certain lifestyle. It’s like claiming that if you get pissed off with Australian backpackers that you’re some sort of racist. And they only started claiming “Roma” heritage when they realised there was a race card that could be played.

  11. As the good folk at Samizdata pointed out:

If you see FRENCH MAN ARRESTED AFTER BOMB ATROCITY as a BBC website headline, you know that there might have been a bomb, there might have been an atrocity, and the person arrested was probably a man. But you can be quite sure he wasn’t French.

Ditto when you read of a gang of Swedes raping a woman on a ferry: you can be sure they are not Swedes (they were Somalis).

  12. So when a farmer places a tree trunk in front of a field gate it’s to prevent jews moving onto their land with their mobile synagogues and is that why there are so many untethered horses grazing the verges of St John’s Wood?

I suppose plod might do something about it if they didn’t worry about being branded antisemitic.

    Have I got that right?

  13. @JohnGalt: what Umbongo said. The tall tales told about Jews baking baby’s blood into matzoh are just that. The stories told about the Roma aren’t.

  14. John Galt – “Tell you what guys, in all the comments you’ve left replace “Roma” or “Gypsy” with “Jews” and see whether you feel the same then.”

I would feel entirely relaxed. I mean it is unlikely that many Jews will be mugging tourists in Rome, but you never know. It is certainly true that Jews tend to look on non-Jews in the West in a hostile manner in the same way that the Roma do. They don’t mug them, although they may well try to rip them off when selling electronic goods. No, they will join a Marxist party and try to get us all killed. Much more intellectual that way. The people who spied for the Soviet Union in the US were grossly disproportionately Jewish.

“I’m not saying that the Roma aren’t problematic, but lets maintain a sense of proportion about dealing with the problems their culture causes to Western sensibilities.”

It ain’t our sensibilities that are suffering. You need to accept that.

  15. ” The tall tales told about Jews baking baby’s blood into matzoh are just that. The stories told about the Roma aren’t.”

Jews do get up to other sorts of fun though:

” The siege was the culmination of a series of events that began in December 1910, with an attempted jewellery robbery at Houndsditch in the City of London by a gang of Latvian immigrants which resulted in the murder of three policemen, the wounding of two others, and the death of George Gardstein, the leader of the Latvian gang.”

    Latvian immigrants. Heh.

  16. Ohh! Look at that or the lack of look at that. Just read the article and can see no mention of -“Roma”-

  17. Daedalus – “Ohh! Look at that or the lack of look at that. Just read the article and can see no mention of -“Roma”-”

Down the memory hole it went? How interesting.

It is also an interesting example of the grievance hierarchy that exists on the Left. It is fine to smear all Czechs in order not to smear some Gypsies.

  18. This is why I think the Moslem problem in Europe is likely to end up being solved in a rather messy way. Bearing in mind what they did to people who hadn’t been going around raping people and shooting up nightclubs, I can see the Einsatzgruppen being given a dust-off.

  19. The point seen here unclearly is statistics. Read Derbyshire.

What percentage of evil / stupid / dishonest / violent people destabilize a culture, a civilization?

I do not think any one here claims all Roma are evil, but the gist seems to be that too many are. Is that correct? If so what is “too many”? What are the implications?

My own take: Who the hell let us idiots decide what is or is not long term survival trait, leading to the continuance of the species? Perhaps Mother Gaia smiles upon dishonest violent genes.
