Shock, Horror – Italian politician suspected of being crooked

Italy’s Five Star Movement (M5S) has been dealt a significant blow following the arrest of a top aide to the mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, an anti-corruption crusader who was swept into power this year on the promise that she would clean up the city.

The arrest on Friday of Raffaele Marra, who has been nicknamed Raggi’s “Rasputin” and is reportedly under investigation in connection to real-estate deals dating back to 2013, comes just days after the resignation of another city councillor under scrutiny for corruption, and the revelation that police have seized documents from city hall as part of their investigation into the mayor’s hiring practices.

This is just such, such, a condemnation of Beppe Grillo’s lot, isn’t it? Because of course we know, absolutely, that the rest of Italian politics is clean as a whistle.

  1. iirc in Milan some years ago there was a revolt.

The driving theme of the taxpayer revolt was “alto redutione” – literally “reduce it yourself” (apols if Italian mangled) where the comfortably ensconced politicians were pleasuring themselves with public funds – the right organising trips to Saltzburg for Wagner, the left holidays in Havana – all mutually agreed.

The incensed peasants rose up… and paid their taxes to an escrow fund administered by a renegade Catholic priest who released funds for actual public works.

I’d guess this tactic might be making a re-appearance.

  2. I really don’t get this affection with M5S. They are commie-fascists (go read their program) and hypocrits (although I get your point that this is part of the definition of politician)

  3. Because of course we know, absolutely, that the rest of Italian politics is clean as a whistle.

It is almost as if there were, you know, long running cultural differences between the north and south of Europe.

    Amazing innit?
