Good grief, a decent Alex Baldwin joke

Alec Baldwin has made President-elect Donald Trump an offer to play at his inauguration on 20 January. His song of choice? AC/DC’s Highway to Hell.

The actor who did a recurring impression of Trump on Saturday Night Live throughout 2016, made the tongue-in-cheek offer on Twitter, after a string of high profile names refused the gig.

It’s not a great joke, true. But it is a reasonable one.

  1. So it’s perfectly OK to refuse to play at an inauguration while being absolutely certain that a baker should never refuse to bake a cake for someone.

Truly, if it weren’t for double standards, the Left would have none at all.

  2. The smart thing to do here would be to approach SyCo, get him to pick out some really talented people who could sing old Sinatra songs, opera and country standards and take 10%.

I’m sure there’s plenty of pretty girls with a nice rack and a decent voice that would like to be the next classical crossover singer, or blokes that want to be the next Michael Buble. The audience for that sort of music doesn’t care that you played Trump’s inauguration.

  3. Alec Baldwin is very funny in 20 Rock. But the mistake these fuckers make is in thinking their ability to read and pull faces which approximate to real emotions (or hit a certain note, or pluck guitar strings in the correct order) means we should give a shit about anything else they say, do or think.

  4. It doesn’t make a bit of difference if every entertainer in the country refuses to perform at the inaguration, he’s still getting inagurated.

  5. Its not a great impression either.

Yarp. He vaguely looks the part, doesn’t really sound like him, but worst of all it’s just not funny.

Which is weird, because Trump has yuge comic potential. He’s a larger-than-life character with very distinctive looks, mannerisms, and that famous ego.

Baldwin is a fine comic actor, but he’s only as funny as his script. The SNL writing boys are probably still too emotionally arseblasted by the ascension of the God-Emperor to write good material about him.

It doesn’t make a bit of difference if every entertainer in the country refuses to perform at the inaguration, he’s still getting inagurated.

It’s quite fun though, seeing celebs who slobbered over Fidel Castro – who tortured and jailed gays – and who have no difficulty accepting money to play in Dubai – where being gay is a criminal offence – insisting they want nothing to do with Trump’s imagined intolerance.

  6. The Inimitable Steve,

I think this sort of immediate political satire is being defeated by the huge quality of stuff that generally appears on the internet. Someone in Bumfuck, Pennsylvania can come up with a witty observation, stick it on Twitter and it spreads on the internet like wildfire. It’s that whole thing of our own standards being raised. We maybe accepted humour at the level of Have I Got News For You or Saturday Night Live, but once you swallow the red pill of the internet, it all looks a bit average.

  7. Trump should accept the offer.

If Baldwin withdraws, he will look like a prat.

If Baldwin accepts, Trump should let him do what he wants, laugh along etc. Trump will look like a good sport, and it will kill the character off.

  8. Bloke in Wiltshire – “The smart thing to do here would be to approach SyCo, get him to pick out some really talented people who could sing old Sinatra songs, opera and country standards and take 10%.”

It is a pity that James Brown is dead. He endorsed Nixon so I am sure he would have been fine with Trump.

But KISS has been a little more patriotic that usual lately. They have been reciting the pledge of allegiance at at least one of their concerts. So Trump should ask them. I can see it now:

Dah dah dah dah dah dah dah

    >Trump emerges from the smoke<

I was made for lovin' you baby
You were made for lovin' me
And I can't get enough of you baby
Can you get enough of me?

I mean gay as f**k, but impressive I would think.
