SOAS again

It quotes black undergraduates who say their academic progress is being hampered by older white professors who cannot relate to them. “Both of my tutors are white men. How can I have a rapport and feel comfortable talking to a 60-year-old white man?” asks one. “Our experiences of life are so different and you’re coming from completely different places.”

You’re going to have to do a bit of work then aren’t you matey? This is an ageing and still largely white society. So you’re going to have to figure out how to relate to old white guys at some point.

  1. The remark–suitably reversed–would be enough to have Plod knocking on a white students door. Will the costumed pork be calling on the scumbags making such racially abusive statements? No –of course not.

Brexit is only the beginning. We need to be shot of May and her BluLabour crew asap whatever happens with Brexit.

  2. What they mean is that they are thick. Oddly enough young students in general don’t have a problem with older teachers. Nor do Indians or East Asians stand out as having problems learning.

It is always one or two particular communities. Those given to marrying their cousins for instance. Or in this case, being raised in a part of the world with a lot of Zika by the sounds of it.

I would dig up a link to the South African lass insisting that Black people have their own ways of knowing which include witchcraft but I can’t be ar$ed.

  3. SMFS: my money is subSaharan from one of those countries on which imperialists blindly imposed working infrastructure and honest administration, then gave them independence, supported by bucket loads of aid money; they were obviously ignorant of the local culture’s norms.

  4. is he saying that the profs at the school of oriental and african studies don’t know anything about orientals or africans? Dynamite if true.

  5. You could replace their professors with black actors. They wouldn’t know the difference. Cheaper, too, probably.

  6. Ljh – “my money is subSaharan from one of those countries on which imperialists blindly imposed working infrastructure and honest administration, then gave them independence, supported by bucket loads of aid money; they were obviously ignorant of the local culture’s norms.”

Bast@rds! Imperialist Bast@rds! They should have respected those local cultural norms. For instance:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigerian_Railway_Corporation

Those colonial types clearly weren’t respecting African ways of knowing. See the traffic figures here:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rail_transport_in_Nigeria

Still, it could be worse. Didn’t Ghana rip up their railways and sell them for scrap?

  7. How can I have a rapport and feel comfortable talking to a 60-year-old white man?

Visit this blog frequently for induction courses entirely free of charge.

Our experiences of life are so different

Yes, approx four decades worth which is why he’s the prof and you’re the student.

you’re coming from completely different places

Probably a good thing until there’s a course entitled “My Life Experiences”. Try Idontgoto University.

  8. Send the dumb bastard to a safe place called Zimbabwe, he can be lectured to by a black, thirty year old veteran of a war that finished nearly forty years ago.

  9. Dr Cromarty,

No doubt there is a School of Western Civilisation and Enlightenment Studies where 60 year old black men give lectures on things they have never experienced.

  10. ‘hampered by older white professors who cannot relate to them’

Not their fucking job, idiot. YOU MUST FIND A WAY TO RELATE TO THEM.

  11. It quotes black undergraduates who say their academic progress is being hampered by older white professors who cannot relate to them.

Somewhere Hendrik Verwoerd is laughing his ar$e off.

  12. What has that got to do with instructing students on content and encouraging them to learn things on their own?

University is a place of learning, I fail to see why someone being 60 and white means they can dispense learning to young people who arent white.

  13. Personally, being in my 80’s I find these white baby boomer generation people a little odd. It is much easier dealing with our local Transylvanians.

  14. Can imagine them trying to get on with a boss. Doesn’t matter what colour.
Different mindset, different experiences, hey that describes pretty much most older people.
    And non students.
Admittedly there are some people that we come across that would be hard to get on with due to very different ways of looking at the world, different experiences, different interests. Does not make it impossible, just requires working at the relationship.
Heck, one of my lecturers was foreign and could understand maybe one word in 10 of what he was talking about, strong German accent – and I’m using hearing aids. Not all his words came through properly.
Still learnt a lot from him.
We had almost nothing in common I daresay.

  15. Then again, is there any net benefit to SOAS? How many times have you watched a caper movie where someone is putting together a crew and you hear the line “we’re going to need an African studies expert”?

  16. Wasn’t it set up to train colonial administrators? Surely it’s time was over by 1960? Unless it is self financing it should be an easy victim of Tory bastard austerity cuts.

  17. Diogenes, is it also a course that attracts overseas students? If so its a money maker. You cancel money makers as much as you want when its your money maker.
Just other people will think you insane.

Now if they cancelled courses like Law…. perhaps that would benefit the country!
I only know 4 lawyers, 2 of them have a law degree, one of those is related to a lawyer so easy enough to get a job the other took a couple of years to find someone willing to take the chance.
The other two – one has a degree in history, one has a maths degree.

  18. Saying you can’t relate to people from cultures other than your own and that they have nothing to teach you is as neat an operational definition of bigotry as I have seen in a while.

  19. Everyone SOAS student who signed up to that criticism should be rounded up and kicked out of the institution asap without any compensation.

And next year, all new black female students at SOAS should as a condtion of acceptance sign a paper saying they agree to having their clits cut out as a sign of their solidarity with their cultural roots.
