Perhaps not the correct career choice

Labour’s Harriet Harman claims sleazy professor offered to bump up her university grades in exchange for sex
The former deputy leader of Labour claims the “repulsive” offer was made while she was studying politics at York University in the 1970s

So you’re a rapey sorta character. Or perhaps just one willing to trade power for sex (ie, not far off the normal male spectrum even if off it). That is, your power for their putting out.

Your power is such that Harry Harmanperson is the best your power position can obtain. Or even make the offer to.

Yes, this is ungallant but might you not think that perhaps the career choice hasn’t led to quite, exactly, the life you desired?

After all there is a reason why there’s an occasional heterosexual who works as a model booker rather than politics lecturer at York.

  1. This tells one that Ms Harman wasn’t bright or diligent enough to get good grades.

It’s all well and good to complain about seedy profs but it’s so much better to do so when past support for the PIE is rattling around in the back of your civil libertarian cupboard.

  2. She’s saying a percentage of women should really be Desmond’s either because they were lucky enough to have had non “repulsive” proff making the same offer or their sense of social responsibilty (H/t Putin) was lower than their personal ambition. I believe her.

  3. She was allegedly propositioned 40 years ago, and that’s news?

    Where’s the real news? Like:

Most Read from The Washington Post: Trump pressured Park Service to find proof for his claims about inauguration crowd

  4. Ok, sometimes I should actually read the source article. There’s even a photo of her at age 21.

a “repulsive” university lecturer made a sleazy offer to bump up her marks in exchange for sex

That’s disgusting. Who was this dirty old man? No doubt some Pale Stale Male who should be fired immediately and replaced with a benevolent person of colour?

    Professor Tennalur Vengara Sathyamurthy

Oh. Well, I’m sure the university authorities caught up with him in the end. Kicked out of his post, no doubt. And I’m sure there’d be no attempt by the Left to cover up his behaviour with flowerly language.
Here’s his obituary in the Independent, in 1998. I’m sure they’ll mention it:

Academic life was oxygen to him – his curiosity about his human habitat knew no bounds; filed in his capacious memory were countless anecdotes, tales of feuds, mishaps, indiscretions and entanglements (he candidly confessed to more than his fair share).

    Candidly.

  5. She may well believe it happened but given how notoriously bad the human memory is and our fondness to remember what we hoped happened, does she have any proof of this or is she just posturing?

  6. Blimey!
” his curiosity about his human habitat knew no bounds”
    Not kidding, were they?
Being curious about what’s in Harperson’s knickers rivals attempting to find out what’s at the South Pole. And possibly as fraught with danger.

  7. B-i-S, and the previous thread with Limericks …

Surely the state of Harriet Harman’s drawers
With evidence of her past amours
Might interest the crowd at Twickers
But not a bunch of left-wing vicars
Such as Corbyn and his Labour boors.

  8. In the 1970s, lecturers often considered shagging female students as a perk of the job. My Oxford tutor was notorious for this. I know of similar stories about lecturers at Newcastle. And Laurie Taylor was professor of sociology at York in the 1970s, though I’m sure none of the rumours about him could possibly be true.

  9. @ Theophrastus
Oxford believed in equal rights without falling for the equal=identical bunkum: one of my arts-side contemporaries was allegedly shagging his female tutor.

  10. i’m sure one of my female friends dated a lecturer at university in the 90s; not one of her lecturers though. And he was a good-looking 28, not an elderly perv.

Not sure about the other way round; all the female academics were wire-haired lesbian munters in my memory. And I would have cheerfully shagged Harriet Harman if I’d been at York 20 years earlier.

  11. “And I would have cheerfully shagged Harriet Harman if I’d been at York 20 years earlier.”

    Preferably doggy, though.

john77: Oh yes, I heard of such. As for St Hilda’s in the 1970s, apparently lesbianism was part of the atmosphere. No pressure whatsoever, but do try mutual hairy pie eating/rug-munching…because men.

  12. MC–“And I would have cheerfully shagged Harriet Harman if I’d been at York 20 years earlier.”

    Really?

The low standards on this blog are shocking.

  13. Theo: In 1974 I had a lovely girlfriend at Hilda’s and I wasn’t a lecturer or a woman at the time (and am still not, come to that).

  14. TMB

I had a cousin at St Hilda’s at the time. She maintained that there was a lesbian undercurrent in the college in the 1970s.

“and am still not, come to that”

Don’t despair. You are what you feel you are.

  15. Update on Sathyamurthy. My wife, at York in the 70s, tells me that Sathyamurthy was a joke. He propositioned women, but nobody found him remotely threatening or even creepy. He was a small, unprepossessing and undistinguished man, and young women regarded him as an absurd figure.

  16. From that Independent obit, a fact that got overlooked in the reporting on Harman’s claim:

“Sathyamurthy’s intellectual and political affiliations were broadly Marxist.”

That obit, by the way… did he dictate it himself from the afterlife? Nauseating.

  17. Is it any surprise that she was a borderline 2:2?

Or that she was at York come to that. Beautiful city but what sort of person can’t get into a real university?

I often complain about the poor standards around here but looking at that photo, in all fairness, I would have done that as a university student. Not proud but there you go.

But in other sexual abuse by teachers news, anyone else noticed that Leftist heart throb and firebrand – France’s answer to President Zoolander in Canada – Emmanuel Macron is married to his former teacher? They met when he was 15. His parents were sufficiently upset about the relationship they moved him to Henri IV to finish his High School and keep her away from him. They married anyway. She is 24 years older than him.

I would just like to take a moment to think of the response from the Usual Suspects if the sexes had been reversed.

  18. Andrew M – “Professor Tennalur Vengara Sathyamurthy”

Am I the only one who read that as Sathyamurphy? Do we really need to import Third World rapists – that Maoist Cult Leader was in the paper yesterday. I am sure we can grow our own.

“Academic life was oxygen to him – his curiosity about his human habitat knew no bounds; filed in his capacious memory were countless anecdotes, tales of feuds, mishaps, indiscretions and entanglements (he candidly confessed to more than his fair share).”

So obituaries are written in language disguised to hide intent. Academic life was oxygen to him? No actual skill then. The rest make him sound like a b!tchy Queen.

  19. Never mind doggie being useful for watching TV. I remember once I was shagging some bird doggie fashion and smoking a joint at the same time. I put the ash tray on her back.

    It was the 80s.

  20. AndrewC – “Never mind doggie being useful for watching TV.”

Perhaps more famously, in Paris Hilton’s sex tape[1], someone rings her mobile. And she answers it. Hard to do that in the missionary position.

No wonder they broke up. I mean how much more emasculating can you get?

[1] Or so a friend told me. Honest.

  21. >I remember once I was shagging some bird doggie fashion and smoking a joint at the same time. I put the ash tray on her back

Does this story end as follows: “And when the smoke and my mind finally cleared I realised it was an actual dog I was shagging. Never smoked that stuff again” ?

  22. I do hope she is not suggesting that some of the fairer sex get on in life by letting rich, powerful or indeed famous men “grab them by the pussy”?

  23. SMFS

“Beautiful city but what sort of person can’t get into a real university?”

York is regularly placed in the top ten of UK universities.

  24. @ SMFS
    York IS a real university.
    @ Theophrastus
But how did it rank for law students in the 1970s?
Universities can improve or deteriorate – look at Warwick which was a left-wing near-basket-case for years and is now near the top. St. Andrew’s was viewed as #3 when I was a pre-teen and isn’t the top dozen now.

  25. There’s just as much corroborating evidence that Harriet Harman was on course for a 2:2 and demanded the sex.
And the Professor said I’ll give you a 2:1 if you back off.
