Rilly? Scots want less government?

Ministers are under pressure to scrap Scotland’s increasingly costly free universal public services, with a majority of Scots keen to abolish free university tuition and personal care for the elderly.

A Sunday Times investigation has found that amid growing pressure on the public purse, the cost of the flagship free policies has soared to about £2.5bn.

In the case of free personal care alone, the price tag has risen by 287% since it was introduced in 2002 — up from £132m to £500m. Scotland’s ageing population means the cost of that and other free services for elderly people is likely to continue to rise sharply.

Taxpayers are also footing an annual bill of £1.3bn for more than 100m free prescriptions dispensed in the community.

And currently it’s not even the Scots paying for it all. Wonder just how much government they would vote for if they really were paying for it all themselves?

  1. The SNP scum have money for their “a Commissar for every Child” schemes but none for elderly care?

    It is a case of priorities it seems. And possibly that the rot of socialism has left many Scots mentally paralysed. Scotland could be the Hong Kong of the North –but for the mental poison of socialism

  2. These policies were popular with Scots at one level of cost. Its ok to re-visit it at another cost. What’s difficult is maintaining a consistent rhetoric. How to do, exactly what you were excoriating others for doing 5 years prior.

  3. I think that facilities that Scots ‘enjoy’ in excess of those ‘enjoyed’ in England, should be paid for by a tax levy on Scottish residents. That goes for the cost of the devolved Scottish Government.

  4. Scotland might well be >50% state-dependent: pensioners, students, NHS, local govt, Scottish govt, etc. So they’d happily vote for more. Just look at France.

  5. Once the SNP captured Glasgow from Labour, they are in power for life as long as the free stuff keeps coming.

    Makes perfect sense. Let the old (more conservative) die, and focus on indoctrinating the youth.

    No different to the strategy by which the marxists infiltrated / took over the teaching profession.

  7. Mr Ecks – “And possibly that the rot of socialism has left many Scots mentally paralysed. Scotland could be the Hong Kong of the North –but for the mental poison of socialism”

    This is the best reason to support Scottish independence, or at least more devolved powers. To rule is to set priorities. To govern means explaining to people why you want more of their money. As long as the Scots can live off the English, they will love socialism. The more bills come home to every Scottish household, the more they will reflect one some eternal truths.

    In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
    By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
    But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
    And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “If you don’t work you die.”
