Doesn’t add to Hollande’s reputation for competence, does it?

At least two people have been injured after a gun was accidentally fired during a speech by President François Hollande, French media have reported.

Hollande was speaking in the town of Villognon in central France to mark the opening of a high-speed railway line between Paris and Bordeaux when a police marksman accidentally opened fire, the Sud-Ouest newspaper reported.

The paper quoted local officials as saying the member of the elite gendarmerie protection squad charged with protecting the president was positioned on a rooftop about 100 metres from the marquee where the ceremony was taking place.

The safety catch on the officer’s rifle was reportedly off and the shot was fired when he tripped while adjusting his position. The bullet pierced the marquee roof, hitting a waiter in the leg and a railway employee in the foot, according to Pierre N’Gahane, state prefect of the Charente region.

There were unconfirmed local media reports that the sniper had shot himself in the foot and could be seen hopping up and down.

Sure, it’s nothing to do with him at all but if someone was to go full Clouseau it would be Hollande’s retinue, wouldn’t it?

I even think he looks like Herbert Lom….sorta

  1. This accident by a French policeman may have been an innocent error but draws into question everything ever done by every French policeman ever, especially their tax evasion planning, which I have no evidence of but estimate at £5,142 trillion.

  2. At least the fucking idiot managed to hit somebody. In fact two people with one shot. Best performance by French shooters ever.

  3. It takes a second to remove the safety: what an earth was it off for? Any shoot would allow for a minimum of ten seconds thinking time.

Andrew C: French policemen do that much tax evasion? I had no idea: clearly the rest of the EU should be checking Switzerland for their accounts for the next Greek bailout 🙂

  4. “The bullet pierced the marquee roof”

Huh? An anti tank round pierces armour which is meant to be providing some protection. A marquee is there to keep the sun and rain off.

And this is what is known as a negligent discharge and irrespective of whether or not anyone was hurt it is a serious offence.

  5. Hollande is so boring he can make a policeman 100 metres away nod off.

It is some achievement if you think about it.

  6. Of course the Froggy Bobby could’ve just been a Frenchman trying to do his patriotic duty by offing M. Hollande.

  7. This is almost certainly Hollande’s fault – the cretin has had his security forces on high alert for over a year. This is unsustainable – they dont have the manpower to keep people on high alert for this long. He should have stood them down, but after the truck attack the useless little cretin panicked.

  8. “tripped while adjusting his position”

Does that mean he had nipped behind a chimney for a piss?

  9. It’s a bit harsh to blame Hollande over this. Still, I bet the gunshot made everyone scatter like rabbits.

And this is what is known as a negligent discharge

We can blame him for this though – negligent discharges have been a staple of French presidents for years.

  10. And this is what is known as a negligent discharge and irrespective of whether or not anyone was hurt it is a serious offence.

He could always blame it on the chimpanzee minkey.

  11. The last time I was in France, I attended a karaoke night in the local bar and was mistaken for François Hollande by a bloke who was a very enthusiastic supporter of the man. The region must be where the 4% who like Hollande live. They have a neo-Trotskyite mayor but he does a reasonable job of dealing with rubbish and road repairs. This story makes me nervous.

  12. The thing that amazed me was that after the shot was heard, Hollande continued speaking. Trump or May would have been underneath a security scrum.

  13. Paul

You should attend a French hunting party. Shots fired willy nilly, results close to zero. But extending that attitude to a city centre is stretching it!

  14. Paul Carlton – “The thing that amazed me was that after the shot was heard, Hollande continued speaking. Trump or May would have been underneath a security scrum.”

Everyone was probably praying that the shooter would get off a second quick shot. “Hit him again!”.

Hollande’s protection could be from the same people who gave Geert Wilders a Moroccan security detail
