Idiots

The government is being urged to tackle segregation in schools after research claimed that more than a quarter of all state primary schools across England and four in 10 state secondaries were ethnically segregated.

The study, which uses a new measure of segregation, also claims that 30% of primary schools and 28% of secondaries are split by socio-economic background.

Sigh, report here.

The over or under representation is done by comparing numbers in a school – by race or socio-economic background – with the census area.

A census area is a rather larger area than a school catchment area.

Sigh.

  1. This is interesting. You have a couple of ways of solving this – you move entire families from one area to another, or you get the kids to travel to schools in different areas.

BUT WAIT…isn’t one of the Left’s arguments against selection that it is wrong to bus kids across town when they have a school near them?

So it’s OK to bus them for political reasons but not OK if it is the parents’ choice?

  2. you move entire families from one area to another

I like this idea. The area I’m thinking of is their own home countries.

  3. So a school with a catchment area somewhere poor has poor kids in it, and a school with a catchment area somewhere middle-class has middle-class kids in it?

    This needed researching?

Quick, best go off and research why Scottish schools have a majority of Scottish kids in them whereas they’re only a small part of the UK population.

  4. No amount of moving (either busing pupils or moving entire families) will fix this basic problem, explained on the first page of the report:

even where a school’s intake itself is mixed, there still could be in-school social segregation due to a lack of mixing between pupils of different backgrounds

Then there’s the obvious failure to take into account age cohorts:

This study found national patterns of both residential and school segregation, with the clear suggestion that the latter is greater than the former

i.e. some areas might be 60% white, but only 20% of school-age kids are white. The school’s demographics are expected to match the school-age cohort’s demographics, not those of all ages.

Anyway, who is complaining about this? From what I’ve seen, Poles like to live near other Poles, Pakistanis like to live near other Pakistanis, and so on.

  5. @AndrewM: “Anyway, who is complaining about this?”

    The usual suspects.

@Rob: “So it’s OK to bus them for political reasons but not OK if it is the parents’ choice?”

    Nail. Head.

  6. Nowt new here. When I were a lad it was religious, which then often related to locality of origin in The Atlantic Isles. And with a higher class of punch ups.

  7. Ordinary people revealing their own wishes by moving away from diversity? Can’t have that!

That’s why we have nations. Diversity+Proximity=War.

  8. The American experience is that the more government gets involved, the MORE segregated schools will become.

  9. A census area is a rather larger area than a school catchment area.

No, actually, it isn’t. You can get census data right down to areas of about 20-50 households.

The census output area that includes my cattle byre has 24 households in it. It’s the only ‘commercial’ building, whereas the one with my house in it has 34 households and about 8 commercial buildings.

  10. 100% with TIS. I don’t feel the slightest need to have my or my children’s culture enriched by adherents of an evil, barbaric, Medieval cult, founded by a slave owning, slave raping, pedophile, misogynistic bastard. Accordingly, I don’t want to live near them or have my children go to school with them. I also don’t want my family, friends or myself to be run over by them.

  11. Let’s see an accounting of where the people who wrote this and the politicians they wrote it for send their children.

I am willing to bet that not only are their schools segregated, they are Whiter than White. Except for Dianne Abbott of course, who wanted such a segregated schooling for her son, she sent him to Africa.

And we know that Corbyn’s children did not go to a diverse school. Coz he divorced his wife over it didn’t he?

  12. The schools in my area are ethnically segregated, locals send their kids to the local language schools and everybody else with a brain* sends theirs to the mixed school.
(*IQ estimate for this region is 98.2)

The local language secondary school is failing (even the locals are loathe to end their children there) so the LEA has decided to close local mixed schools to ensure a feed stream of local language only students.

The parents of the children in the mixed school are mostly Professors, Post-Grads, mature undergrads, medical Drs and Consultants, and immigrant professional classes.

  13. From the linked Guardian piece:

Cantle said: “We know that contact between groups improves tolerance and breaks down prejudice”

    Does it really? Citation needed.

  14. I thought a diverse class included a fat one, a thin one, a nerdy one, ones good at arts, science and languages, a class clown, a teacher’s pet, some triers and some that make learning look easy.
I need re-educating, as that is not a diverse grouping at all apparently

  15. These people must have been bunged a few quid by the Private Schools Association, or whatever the trade body is. If this happens in an area anyone who can will bale to private education. Others will move to an area where it isn’t happening, thus as GameCock points out further reinforcing the very situation it is trying to prevent.

As Ecks has said the Mad Blue Labour cow just might do something along these liens.

  16. I thought a diverse class included a fat one, a thin one, a nerdy one, ones good at arts, science and languages, a class clown, a teacher’s pet, some triers and some that make learning look easy.

You forgot the one that smelled. There was always one of them.

  17. Good addition. I wonder if the rule of poker about mugs applies. If after 20 minutes you haven’t figured out who the smelly one is, . . .

  18. Slightly off topic but relevant. I am English born married to an SE Asian, two sons and one step son. Last week I noticed none of the Asians have integrated. I know two groups; the ‘Bar Girls’ married to white men, and the Asians, mostly in medical professions.

Through school we got to know them, and strangely, the children of mixed race families have mixed race relationships. The Asian parents and children, have all married other Asian classmates; people they have known since kindergarten. This includes my own step son. I know pretty small sample, (20+ families) but quite strange; SE Asians are amongst the most western idolizing of all the Asians, yet it appears they don’t want to mix either.

  19. one day you all will find that racism is natural .
See ethnic grouping in the USA.
As for race and war – wait and see.

  20. People do tend to group. Shared experiences, shared cultures, shared looks even.
My school was small, about 600 boys across 7 years.
The local high school my wife went to, about a half mile from mine, was the only state school in the town and had space for about 1700 kids, over 5 years. So they had usually above 1800 kids. Parents get told their kid has to take 2 or 3 buses to get to a school in next town? They appeal and win.

Both of us noticed lots of groupings, the kids segregate themselves into whatever group or groups.
The bullies, the bullied, the posh, the sporty, the rebels, the idiots etc.

Seen it outside school to a lesser degree – shared experiences, shared culture often gravitate towards each other in social occasions like lunch or drinks.

  21. Seen it outside school to a lesser degree – shared experiences, shared culture often gravitate towards each other in social occasions like lunch or drinks.

And you can bet your last penny that the people “urging the government to do something about segregation” wouldn’t be seen dead associating with anyone outside of their rigid ideological social circle.
