Interesting about Marvel characters

Well, OK, personally I find nothing very interesting about them at all but still:

A boss at Marvel has blamed a fall in sales on its move towards more diverse characters.
David Gabriel, who’s vice president of sales, claims readers are “turning their noses up” at diversity and don’t “want female characters out there”.
Comic book sales have been falling at the company since October.
But some fans argue it’s actually rebooted and complicated storylines putting them off instead.

Hmm.

In the last few years. Marvel’s brought in more gay, non-white and female characters.
But many are new versions of old characters and some fans aren’t happy about that.
They include a female Thor, a mixed-race Spider-Man, a black teenager who took over the Iron Man story and a Muslim Ms Marvel.
Iceman also came out as gay.

Well, maybe:

“I don’t know that that’s really true, but that’s what we saw in sales.
“Any character that was diverse, any character that was new, our female characters, anything that was not a core Marvel character, people were turning their nose up.”

One stab at an explanation. The Marvel characters are, underneath the superficial differences, archetypes. Of the hero, the evil, the duplicitous and so on, just as with the various folk characters and archetypes they’re so obviously mimicking. And what the actual archetypes are changes rather more slowly than what some people think they should.

If that’s so then the answer is possibly quite simple. New female characters should perhaps be based upon those folk female archetypes, not just female versoins of male ones?

  1. If our civilisation survives all this bollocks our descendants will look back on this period and shake their heads in utter wonder.

  2. The whole Marvel edifice is so creatively bankrupt that it is no surprise that:
    a) they only do new stuff because political correctness and
    b) they fuck it up.

  3. Presumably 90% of their audience is awkward teenage white boys and the men they grow into. This audience probably identifies with/fantasises about being Tony Stark quite a lot, but less so about being a black lesbian*

Also, like many marketing departments, Marvel’s has probably been confused by mentals on twitter shrieking about diversity into thinking that’s what real people – as opposed to twitter mentals – want.

*I’d much rather be a hot black dyke than an industrialist who only seems to shag Gwyneth Paltrow, but it takes all sorts

  4. A boss at Marvel has blamed a fall in sales on its move towards more diverse characters.

    Surprise!!!

But some fans argue it’s actually rebooted and complicated storylines putting them off instead.

[“some fans” being BBC-speak for “we made this bit up because we couldn’t find anyone that would give us a supporting quote”]

There’s an easy way for Marvel to test this theory: reboot the storyline again with the proper characters, see if customers return.

  5. Dr Who is now to cart a black lesbian about with him.

I expect Capaldi is glad to be going.

CM is attempting a cultural takeover.

I would link to Paul Joseph Watson’s latest video attacking the poison of modern art but You Tube have made it age restricted. They claim that a very short segment of a modern “artist” waving a broomhandle attached to his groin makes it “adult”. The real reason is that it makes clear the reality of political “art”.

  6. The Social Justice Warriors hate Britain and the British. They hate White Americans. It is no wonder that when they take over a franchise, they will express that hatred and – given there are very few Black Jewish lesbians in wheelchairs who fork out for comics – sales drop.

This happens to everything that SJWs touch.

Everyone should remember that Gays are not a statistically significant community. Transsexuals are not a statistically significant subset of the Gays. If you want to sell anything, you need to sell it to (mainly White) heterosexuals.

Who do not like parting with their hard earned cash in order to be p!ssed on from high. That’s more a Gay thing.

  7. New female characters should perhaps be based upon those folk female archetypes, not just female versoins of male ones?

Yeah. I think pretty much all those archetypes are hate crimes now.

I mean, what are the new female superheroes going to do? Bore their enemies to death while trying on new shoes and demanding to know why they don’t love them any more?

  8. Muslim Ms Marvel

She could break you in half but as long as you beat her her with a stick no wider than your thumb, she will take it because it is sunnah?

You know, there may be a very specialised market for that sort of thing.

  9. I thought much like MC.

People want to see themselves in their Superheroes. Make Superheroes into minority characters then not so many people are interested in them.

This is why my favourite superhero is Brown Bottle in Viz.

  10. Dongguan John – “People want to see themselves in their Superheroes. Make Superheroes into minority characters then not so many people are interested in them.”

It is not so much they are minorities as they are hostile. After all James Bond is half Scottish. Even worse his mother is Swiss. Not even German Swiss.

    And Frodo is a hobbit.

  11. More seriously, Superman is a frickin’ illegal immigrant from Krypton. And Jewish. There is a large literature pointing out the influence of the author’s Jewishness on Superman. What other minority can adopt a boring name, put on a pair of glasses and assimilate?

But it doesn’t matter because the author of Superman did not hate White America.

  12. “New female characters should perhaps be based upon those folk female archetypes, not just female versoins of male ones?”

I’m not sure there are many folk heroic female archetypes.

But the reasonable success of Black Widow in the Marvel movies is about understanding that her strengths don’t like in being a physical character. It’s more about manipulation and espionage. And Katniss Everdene in The Hunger Games is an action character that works very well for girls.

  13. I like watching the wheels fall off a bandwagon. It’d be reassuring for a company (any company) to tell the SJW’s (who have no stake in their businesses) to piss off.

I like Marvel even more, though, for giving it a go, and telling them that it don’t work.

I don’t really give a shit about comics (I’m a grown up, y’see) but this article- and props to he who spotted the BBC’s editorialising over reboots- gives me hopes that the young are still smart enough to reject meddling and rebel.

  14. SMFS,

I somewhat agree with The Last Psychiatrist. Her power isn’t in being the action girl as such, it’s in things like threatening suicide, making a speech and yes, acting.

  15. Post modern media has convinced the editors at Marvel that sexual orientation is important. They have not convinced society.

Additionally, from a literature standpoint, pausing a story to tell us things not related to the story is a breakdown of continuity. When that breakdown is for nonsense, the readers asks himself, “Why am I reading this?”

  16. I do enjoy seeing corporations stumbling dazed amongst the ruins of their business as yet another politically-inspired initiative self-detonates. You would think it would “encourager les autres but it never seems to.

  17. i read about a transformers side publication about two of the robot characters’ long-term gay relationship. First thought wow i’m impressed there’s actually a market for gay alien robot comics? And why not? If the rights holders don’t think it damages the main storyline revenues for those characters, let it be. Classic product differentiation that serve both those fans who wish to see good robots save the world from bad robots and others want to see whether the one who turns into a truck is in a strop because the one who turns into an attack helicopter has yet again failed to do the dishes.

  18. “99% of readers of comic book readers are boys”

Actually this is one reason why there are so many successful, established female super heroes and villains. With very revealling costumes.

The problem seems to be more about changing established characters. Comics fans have previously gone mental over characters getting a new costume or haircut so changing their race or sex should have been expected to create a backlash.

  19. At the end of the day, if you’re a fan of Spider-Man, you probably quite like Peter Parker. When they change him out for Miles Morales and sales drop, it’s not because people don’t like that he’s black, it’s that they don’t like that he’s not Peter Parker.

As mentioned, what they need to do is create new characters that fit their desired race/gender/sexuality/religion. Issue with that is that people won’t read them, but trying to get fans of one character to follow another by having them use the same name seems to be doomed to failure.

  20. I think it is known as ‘know your audience’. Teenage boys like hero characters who beat up bad guys and take no sh*t from nobody cos they are relatively powerless. They also like tough but sexy female characters in form fitting outfits cos they are full of exploding hormones. They have extremely limited interest in almost anything the SJWs care about. Nor will they. Ever. This is a good thing.

  21. Pressed send too early. Basically we can be prevented from doing things we like but they don’t approve of (sadly) but as yet they cant force us to voluntarily spend our own money (as opposed to the stuff the government confiscates) on things that they like but we don’t.

  22. Bloke in Wales

A boss at Marvel has blamed a fall in sales on its move towards more diverse characters.
    Surprise!!!”

Indeed. You have to wonder what their marketing department was playing at. Didn’t they market test any of these changes to see what would happen? Go out and find what people liked about the existing characters and make sure they kept the main bits?

Maybe there is a market out there looking for SJW comic heroes, but crashing your existing customer base in search of it is downright stupidity and they deserve all they get.

Its probably safe to assume they won’t be the last as marketers tend to live in the SJW echo chamber on twatter.

  23. You have to wonder what their marketing department was playing at.

They sound like every single marketing department I have ever known. They market to each other. The least ‘diverse’ department (in terms of non-Borg drones) in any company, anywhere.
