Bit of a puzzler in The Guardian

So, their writers wibble a bit about the general election having been called:

The SNP, having formally demanded a second referendum, will find it difficult to produce a manifesto which does not make that its central plank. Failure to do so would disappoint its core support, although the party so recently said the ideal timing for indyref2 would not be until the shape of the Brexit negotiations was known.

But another general election might give them majority rather than minority government in Holyrood.

Umm, what?

The Scottish P doesn’t have elections just because the Westminster one does.

  1. The press has really been caught out here and the BBC and Guardian really do seem to have their noses out of joint.

No leaks, no “the PM will say ….” no smug Nick Robinson “the BBC has learnt …”* just a straight wham, take that you fuckers.

*BBC code for Sky got the scoop

  2. Tim,

The scots have Westminster seats though- they are voted for separately to the Holyrood parliament.

  3. BiND: “…just a straight wham, take that you fuckers.”

I still think May is too Tory-light, but my god, she hasn’t half set about the left with a big sword on this. They literally don’t know how to react.

  4. I think Timmy is feigning ignorance here John, the political experts at the Graun have conflated MPs and MSPs.

  5. Regarding the manner of the announcement, we’ve had decades of PMs leaking what they are about to do to the press, Brown even tried to pick the timing of an election based on it. Having a Pm decide to do something and then doing it, is a refreshing change.

  6. The Guardian’s ongoing hysteria is a joy to behold.

In the Observer on Sunday, Nick Cohen – who clearly had an inkling this was coming – went ‘crazy bloke in the pub’ swearymental at the Corbynistas for spoiling everything.

Didn’t spot it! Hadn’t had my usual cuppa when I posted.

(Actually checked Wikipedia to make sure I wasn’t labouring under Spud-levels of misunderstanding!)

  8. The SNP have to make a new referendum the central plank of their manifesto, which will be excellent, it’ll give the opposition parties a great stick to beat them with – ‘Don’t fancy IndyRef2? Vote for us instead!!’

We will then see exactly how much of the current SNP support really wants another vote.

Don’t know why. Providing they support Corbyn and make him own the result it could be the saving of the Labour party. They probably will do very badly, but then at least they can dump Corbyn before the Momentum mob get their claws into everything. If it was later you might get rid of Corbyn, but he might just be replaced by another Corbyn type.

  10. On the other hand, this may mean that Momentum dial down the crazy for a while.

They’ve had one schism already, and half of them regard the other half as Hitler for wanting appointments based on one-man-one-vote, or not. Either way is exactly like Hitler.

If Corbyn loses it will be down to insufficient purity amongst the faithful, and selfishness amongst other “progressives”.

What’s needed is more Leftism not less. This election will prove that for sure. Just like all the others.

That ship has sailed, surely? When Corbyn goes off to enjoy his well-earned pension, he’ll be replaced by another identikit apparatchik*. The only way forward for Real Labour would be to do an SDP and start afresh. But that’s a lot of hard work (and the centre ground is full of “none of the above” parties), and so unlikely to have much appeal.

    * $deity knows who : Abbopotamus? McDonnell, who needs to remove his socks to count above 10??
