If only they actually understood economics

It was recently announced that the UK came 19th in the World Happiness Report and yet we are allegedly the fifth richest economy in the world.

What is the point?

– the economy is not achieving what its essential purpose should be and we are at least 14 places too low.

Now if we were number 4 in the World Happiness Report that would be a result.

Err, we want GDP per capita, not just gross GDP, and we want it at PPP too. Where the UK is 24 in the list. Meaning that our happiness is 5 places up from our economic ranking. Neoliberalism makes you happy, you see?

  1. ‘the economy is not achieving what its essential purpose should be’

The economy doesn’t have a purpose, any more than dirt has a purpose. Trading goods and services results in the outcomes desired by the participants. Statists don’t like that, they want it to have a ‘purpose.’ And they want to be involved.

“So, Gamecock, when you bought that loaf of bread, what was the purpose?”

    What?

BTW, I buy bread for me. Not for some position on some sillyass ‘World Happiness Report.’

I think Murphy is sufficiently puffed up to probably be secretly pleased that you now have 2 category headings for his cretinous activities

  3. immigrants who want to come here * (% immigrants who come here and remain here)

Apply that to every country on earth. That’s your happiness index. There’s a lot more people trying to climb onto the underside of Eurostars than trying to get into Somalia.

  4. Statists don’t like that, they want it to have a ‘purpose.’ And they want to be involved. in charge

    Fixed for accuracy

  5. Sex makes some people happy. Well, those getting pleasure from it…

Perhaps people should have more sex.
Form an orderly queue please gentlemen, I’ll get to you when I have time…

The happiest nations – isn’t North Korea supposed to be the happiest according to their own people?

  6. You can forgive people for disregarding GDP per capita. Dave and George tried very hard to keep those numbers out of the limelight, so they could pretend that immigration was making us richer.

  7. WTF, Peter Dawe, contributor and director of Progressive Puke, who on the site is listed as “Entrepreneur and independent politician known to Richard Murph” (sic)…..

    Would be this Peter Dawe….

who doesn’t seem to share the same values as Progressive Puke. Perhaps money talks for Ritchie after all. Brilliant. Ritchie has joined forces with a UKIP supporting, EU hating, millionaire. If he’s a tax avoider as well I’ll piss myself.

“Mr Dawe stood unsuccessfully for UKIP in East Cambridgeshire District Council elections in 2013, but resigned his party membership once Britain voted to leave the European Union. The entrepreneur, who described the EU as “evil,” said: “I just see Brussels as a corrupt cesspit of self-interest and self-aggrandizing of the worst sort of politicians.” He claimed that toilet paper is no longer as strong as it used to be because of EU regulations (on the back of lobbying by manufacturers) so people have to buy more of it.”

  8. Hilarious. He’s not a believer in the Curajus State:

“My platform is one of empowerment. Government has for too long taken initiative away from people. I will empower people to make their world a better place.

If you want your school to be better funded, then go out and raise funds. If the street is unattractive, go plant some flowers or put up some street art, and so on.”

  9. How apt that the Progressive Pulse website seems to have an image of a pile of snowflakes melting, at the top of every page (well, as I type)…

    Brilliant!

He sounds like a sensible chap (from your link):

The entrepreneur, who described the EU as “evil,” said: “I just see Brussels as a corrupt cesspit of self-interest and self-aggrandizing of the worst sort of politicians.”

  11. @PF,

There’s plenty more quotes in that article that Ritchie would choke on.

I found one reference to him on Spud’s blog, where he’s referred to as an independent politician and friend he sometimes disagrees with. I bet if Dawes wasn’t loaded, Ritchie would treat him like he treats his blog posters.
