At least it was heterosexual and consensual

A singing teacher at a prestigious Roman Catholic boarding school had sex with a sixth former after giving her free lessons and sending her a picture of him in the bath.

David Brown, 46, also encouraged the 18-year-old to take drugs after telling her how much they would boost their sexual relationship.

Another school I’ve been to with a sex scandal. But this is a bit different. Duty of care and all that, betrayal of that. But adult woman shags her singing teacher is not really the stuff of which nightmares are made.

  1. That is not much comfort. Especially as the “adult” part is a technicality – he had been, presumably, grooming her for years when she was not an adult. And encouraging her to take cocaine is utterly inappropriate.

Parents should be reasonably secure in assuming they do not send their daughter to a Catholic school in order for her to be fed a line, f*cked and taught to snort coke by the music master.

  2. I marvel at the stupidity of this teacher in sending pictures and messages of a sexual nature to his 18 yo lover. Was he not aware of the carelessness (not to mention, the fickleness) of young women? Did he want to be caught, or is he simply rather dim?

  3. At 16 in Britain, she can screw who she likes. At 18, she is legally an adult. In the US, maybe different.

The man is obviously a twat, but if that was a crime, then the entire Labour Party (and most of the members of the others) would be inside.

  4. I agree with SMFS (it always hurts to do that) and with Theophrastus. However this:
“The relationship was only discovered after the schoolgirl’s mother found messages on her iPhone – which Brown had given her – and on a laptop which discussed their sex sessions.”
is just as bad surely. Lie it or not -and Mum clearly doesn’t – her daughter is 18. She has no busiest as at all looking through her iPhone text messages or interrogating her laptop. Oh the shock of discovering this 18-year-old woman has a sex life!
So I feel the need to ask Mum: What was it induced you to look at her laptop? Was it the answer you received to the question “Magic mirror on the wall…”?

  5. Don’t teachers have special rules about shagging their students, even if they’re aged 16+? Or does that only apply in the state sector?

  6. In answer to my own question:

The Sexual Offences Act 2003 made it an offence for a person over 18 in a position of trust to have a sexual relationship with a child under 18, regardless of whether the relationship is consensual and even if the person does not teach the child. Prior to that act, the age of consent – 16 – was the only issue.

  7. Ironman – “She has no busiest as at all looking through her iPhone text messages or interrogating her laptop.”

I don’t see why not. Her house, her rules.

“Oh the shock of discovering this 18-year-old woman has a sex life!”

That is missing the point. She might have complained if her daughter was screwing a fellow student. But she is not. She is complaining that she trusted a teacher and that teacher abused that trust.

“So I feel the need to ask Mum: What was it induced you to look at her laptop?”

Parents have a moral obligation to look at their children’s laptops.

  8. Theo: … or is he simply rather dim?

A music master? Like Paul Mason? Dim?

    Surely not!

Grooming laws are sinister precrime stuff.

You mean like carrying tools for breaking and entering? I mean, there might be a perfectly innocent reason why a multiply convicted young man might be carrying a bunch of locksmith tools with him. But it is still a crime.

I am not sure grooming ought to be criminal. But teachers should not be doing it.

Mind you, it would make looking at schools more interesting. You would not only have to consider the education you are giving your little sprog but also which of the creepy older teachers you would like as a son-in-law.

  11. You mean like carrying tools for breaking and entering? I mean, there might be a perfectly innocent reason why a multiply convicted young man might be carrying a bunch of locksmith tools with him

The whole point of locksmith tools is not breaking, and entering.

  12. She’s reached the age of majority, and there are many on the left who want it reducingto 16. She can vote, buy cigarettes and alcohol, sign her own hospital discharge papers if she needs to and do everything else an adult can do without the approval of her parents or even school for that matter.

So unless she, and all other 18 year-olds are to be declared incompetent and have their rights revoked I don’t see what can be done. But what’s most worrying is that these supposedly vulnerable 18 year-olds can, in aggregate, vote to make changes in the way I live my life and raise my taxes. They are either old enough to take care of themselves or they aren’t. If they aren’t then they aren’t old enough to vote.

It’s even more the case in the debate over 16 year-olds.

Let’s stop infantilising these young adults and tell them about the dangers of life once they become adults.

But this is nothing like that. It’s not illegal for men to have a libido, lust after anyone, or to buy a child an iPad. I gave a teenage girl a laptop. Lives in our street. Broke her laptop and my old one was doing nothing. So rather than giving it to a charity shop, she got it. Was I trying to shag her? Well, no. Her mother on the other hand…

The whole thing is really dangerous. It’s not about policing actions, but policing the interpretation of actions. You get people who just like kids, or even a particular kid. Completely innocent. Not trying to shag them.

  14. SMFS: You would not only have to consider the education you are giving your little sprog but also which of the creepy older teachers you would like as a son-in-law.

Or -in France- daughter-in-law and in the Elysée Palace.

I wonder whether a bloke married to his school teacher would get far in UK public life. I think both Alex Salmond and Ken Clarke have crones but the Macrons’ 25 years age difference is so weird as to be positively off-putting.

It’s not about her. It’s about the teacher abusing a trust. Doctors aren’t supposed to have affairs with patients nor counsellors with clients, nor police officers with crime victims and so on. Regardless of age. It’s about a teacher abusing a position of trust, not an 18 year old girl having a shag.

What can be done? Arresting and prosecuting the teacher can be done.

So that (hopefully) in future a teacher will say “sorry love, I do fancy you but it is just not appropriate. Come back once you have left school and I can bang you all you want but at the moment I am in a position of trust and can’t break that”.

  16. Andrew C,

She’s an adult, what about here human right to have a relationship with who the hell she pleases?

More seriously, I’m quite happy that shools put in to teacher’s contracts and make it a gross disciplinary offence to have relationship but it shouldn’t be a law. If schools don’t have such clauses patents should be made aware if such a clause doesn’t exist.

Doctors are in a different position, they could be making intimate examinations of their patients.

  17. I should actually read the article sometimes:

A professional conduct panel of the National College for Teaching and Leadership

So it wasn’t a courtroom, it was a kangaroo court of jumped-up quangocrats. I’m not in favour of teachers shagging their students, whether they’re aged 17 years and 364 days or 18 years. But I’m even less in favour of extra-judicial proceedings.

Brown was prohibited from teaching indefinitely which means he cannot teach in any school, sixth form college, relevant youth accommodation or children’s home in England.

Presumably he’s still free to teach in Wales and Scotland.

    Andrew C,

…Doctors are in a different position, they could be making intimate examinations of their patients.”

What about patients? What about their human rights to have a relationship with any doctor who has given them an intimate examination? See how that works?

It isn’t about her, it’s about him.

Seeing the position only from her point of view ends up asking why a 9 year old who really, really, really wants to perform oral sex on a bloke shouldn’t be allowed to do so.

  19. “It’s always the music teacher”

Art teachers and (oddly?) maths teacher seem to have quite the proclivity too.

  20. Andrew C,

“It’s not about her. It’s about the teacher abusing a trust. Doctors aren’t supposed to have affairs with patients nor counsellors with clients, nor police officers with crime victims and so on. But in this case, all the evidence is that the shagging took place after she left the school.

  21. “Seeing the position only from her point of view ends up asking why a 9 year old who really, really, really wants to perform oral sex on a bloke shouldn’t be allowed to do so.”

We’ve decided as a society that 9 year-olds aren’t capable of making those sorts of decisions and need protecting from themselves as well as others. We have decided that 18 year-olds are capable of making those decisions.

  22. In my bog standard comp secondary school, it was one of the geography teachers who was most likely to be shagging his students – and they weren’t 16 either. One of the girls in the sixth form hooked up with a maths teacher – a secret the rest of us kept until after she’d left.

Doctors still need consent to examine patients intimately, so why does this make any difference? If a doctor wants to be in a relationship with a patient, then the doctor just needs to stop being the official doctor of that patient, which is easily done (except in some rural backwater where there is only one doctor, but then nobody cares anyway)

Not so easy for a teacher to switch classes or whatever to avoid being in a position of authority with one of the students they want to shag.
