Ooooh, the outrage, the outrage

Are American voters actually just stupid? A new poll suggests the answer may be “yes”
ABC News poll suggests that if we ran the election all over again, Trump would still win — by more. What gives?

Yes, of course, Salon:

Among surveyed Americans who say they voted in the 2016 election, 46 percent say they voted for Hillary Clinton and 43 percent for Trump — very close to the 2-point margin in the popular vote. However, while Trump would retain almost all of his support if the election were held again today (96 percent), fewer of Clinton’s supporters say they’d stick with her (85 percent), producing a 40-43 percent Clinton-Trump result in a hypothetical redo among self-reported 2016 voters.

Mhmm, hmm,

The findings from this new poll are troubling. But they should not come as a surprise.

Political scientists and other researchers have repeatedly documented that the American public does not have a sophisticated knowledge of political matters.

That’s the way to do it laddie. Just keep telling them out there they’re all ignorant rubes and they’ll come around to your point of view in no time.

  1. Exactly the same as the EU referendum.
“Only pig-shit thick ignorant stupid thugs who shouldn’t be allowed to vote will vote LEAVE”.

  2. Alternative version, not enough were indoctrinated last time, and the effect is beginning to wear off on those.

  3. Mysteriously they seem to have had the required sophistication and knowledge in 2008 and 2012, but lost it somewhere between 2012 and 2016.

    Huge if true.

  4. Maybe a few Dem voters took a dislike to the attempts by the US Securitate to bring Trump down by alleging that he was a Russian patsy.

Or maybe some have warmed to him because the cruise missile attack on Syria and the deployment of the MOAB in Afghanistan are the sort of things they’d expected under Hellary.

  5. > Isn’t this just the advantage the incumbent always has?

Yes. Trump’s approval ratings tell a different story. At the 100-day mark, Trump’s approval rating is below that of any other recent president (as far back as Truman).

Doesn’t this offer some proof to the adage that Trump supporters took him seriously but literally and his opponents took him literally but not seriously.

His supporters no doubt expected that he wouldn’t get the wall paid for by Mexico or make much of a dent in to Obmacare and are sticking with him. His detractors are no doubt breathing a sigh of relief these things didn’t happen and have looked more closely at their knee jerk reaction to vote Clinton on the basis that she’s not a Trump and thought, hmm maybe I shouldn’t have done that.

    They polled the wrong people.

“Nevertheless, there are a lot of smart, productive people in the US who see things more deeply than that. Those people tend to concentrate themselves on the Northeast and West coasts, in states which voted overwhelmingly for Hillary.” – SJW

  8. You know, you’re being pretty narrow minded there.

Yes, this stuff turns off men, but the power elite and the media negging needy women about how they don’t love fags and shrinkled old prunes enough because they’re bigoted and ignant has been working just fine.

  9. Hillary is no longer in a position to go on campaigning. Trump is. Do you not think you would have got the same response in the UK by comparing Teresa May and Ed Milliband?

  10. Trump does have a full time job too – he cannot just go campaigning for the fun of it.

You would think with his numbers after these first few months that more would vote differently now…. but apparently not the case.

  11. Andrew M,
Trump’s approval ratings being low is irrelevant, as we will never know what Hillary’s approval ratings would have been had she won at the electoral college.

  12. At the 100-day mark, Trump’s approval rating is below that of any other recent president

Yes, but Trump is more detested than any other president. If he cured cancer and found Madelaine McCann in the same morning, people will still disapprove.

  13. To be fair to Chelsea, they’ve got a lot of games to catch up on, and the buggers keep winning.

  14. She still seems to come up on my newsfeed rather too often. As does fucking Chelsea.

I think even Hillary recognizes that she is too damn old and frail to go for a third shot at POTUS in 2020. The last analysis I can find from the Washington Post suggests that Hillary Clinton spent $1.4 billion against Trump’s $958 million, to still lose the election. That’s an awful lot of money to spunk away.

Hillary would love to push Chelsea into a safe House seat (such as that of the ageing Nita Lowey D-NY), but she is being restrained by those around her on the basis that the Democratic party are still bloody, wounded and resentful of her loss in 2016, so while Hillary will be the pushy parent in the background, it will be a while before Chelsea actually makes a run. Probably not until the 2022 mid-terms.

  15. We’ve already definitively prove Hillary can’t win. Some voters are smart enough to understand making the same mistake twice is no longer a mistake.

I sit here wrapped in the warmth of my smug, knowing I didn’t make the mistake in the first place.
