Schadenfreude

Hillary Clinton’s communications team decamped to the Javits Centre, in the Hell’s Kitchen district of Manhattan, where preparations for her victory party were being made.

The venue, which would fill up with Hillary aides, donors, friends and well-wishers over the course of the day, was chosen in large part because of its distinctive feature: a glass ceiling. If everything went as planned, it would be the glass ceiling of the presidency that lay shattered under Hillary by the end of the night.

The effort that went into that. While failing to actually win the election.

  1. You could add that to a dictionary as one of the example phrases they use to describe a word, and the word is ‘bathos’.

  2. The problem with the Baby Boomer generation is their narcissism. They were raised on Spock and think the world revolves around them.

So naturally Hillary planned a party that was all about her and did not give a thought to the people who were supposed to vote for her.

  3. I had to define this word to a small person last week. He got it immediately and told me he felt like that when his sister took some sweets from the cupboard and “I told Mummy and Mummy gave them to me”. I wonder whether the Germans have a word for the feelings of the sister looking at the smug Schadenfreuden infused grin of your brother in that situation.

  4. HB – I get that the girl doesn’t get the sweets and has to watch her brother scoff them, but there seems to be quite a high risk of turning him into a little sneak. I’d lob the sweets in the bin, stick her in the naughty room for ten mins with appropriate advice about theft, and tell the boy not to be such a tell-tale.

  5. Hallowed Be: I wonder whether the Germans have a word for the feelings of the sister looking at the smug Schadenfreude infused grin of your brother in that situation.

Any reader of war comics will already be familiar with a perfectly serviceable word suitable for the occasion:
    Schweinhund!

  6. “The problem with the Baby Boomer generation is their narcissism. They were raised on Spock and think the world revolves around them.”

Dr, not Mr. Otherwise they would think logically.

  7. The defeat of Hellary: “there was no end to the ways in which nice things are nicer than nasty ones”.

    [Kingsley Amis]

  8. synp – “Dr, not Mr. Otherwise they would think logically.”

Does Spock think logically? Or is he a Marxist English Lit major’s idea of what logic is?

  9. Reading the article, it occurred to me that this would make a great film! Come on Hollywood, give it a shot!

  10. It gets better:

Every detail was designed to mark Hillary Clinton’s moment in history — from the glass ceiling at Manhattan’s Javits Center, where her supporters were gathered, to her and hubby Bill’s suite at The Peninsula hotel, selected so she could personally see Trump Tower, home to the foe she was set to crush. Then came the voter returns. […]

Hillary sat stone-faced, trying to process the unexpected and abrupt reversal of her fortunes. “OK,” she said over and over as she nodded. It was all she could muster.

    […]

Kellyanne Conway picked up Huma Abedin’s call and handed her phone to Trump. Hillary took Huma’s phone and faked a smile with her voice. “Congratulations, Donald,” she said, suppressing the anger that touched every nerve in her body.

    😀

  11. Yes, the whole article is comedy gold (hence film suggestion) .even funnier than watching Rachel Maddow’s smirk get wiped off her face.

  12. Who’d play her in a film tho?

Emma Thompson was good (as she always is) in Primary Colors, but for Geriatric Hillary I reckon they should go for Linda Blair and a swimming pool’s worth of pea soup.

  13. Rob–With the depths patrolled and populated by the Demo-Creeps a “bathos-sphere” might be more useful.

The high point of the evening should have been the glass ceiling being literally exploded. A symbolic triumph over the Patriarchy that Democrat planners would have accepted with open arms.

The side effects–ie hundreds of thousands of heavy, razor-sharp glass fragments falling at high-speed onto Killery and all her chums would be, of course, as unintended by the originator of the scheme as it would be unexpected and unwelcome for the unfortunate snowflakes below.

  14. TIS: Perhaps Macroon’s Granny would be willing to take the role–right age and look already.

Plus it could be made in French to ensure Art-House success but zero viewing figures.

  15. I don’t really see anything wrong with Hillary’s team organising a victory party in advance.

But that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy it hugely when the whole thing falls flat.

  16. Tel,

It’s not the organising of the party that invokes schadenfreude in me but the hubris of the glass ceiling and view of Trump tower.

  17. @TW

Venue was also chosen to allow invitees to watch her celebration firework display without going outside and mingling with the proles.

After polls closed, NYPD rejected application for fireworks – had me rotflmao and first indicator she’d lost.
