  1. “Likewise, humanitarian attitudes are in sharp decline… It’s no surprise to learn that responses from 6,500 people in 12 countries, including the UK, US, Turkey and France, found a lack of confidence, compassion and leadership in response to the humanitarian issues of our time – especially the ongoing refugee crisis of north Africa and the Middle East.”

Well, yes. Because what are they fleeing, these mostly single young men of fighting age…?

  2. “While the empire was founded on racist beliefs about the supposed inferiority of the people it subjugated, humanitarianism was its proudly flaunted justification. This was manifested perfectly in Winston Churchill, who was able to boast of killing “savages” in Sudan, while also playing a leading role in creating the international humanitarian norms that many consider one of the great accomplishments of the 20th century.”

The humanitarian norms they tried to bring were the institutions that had led to Britains wealth. That those countries were incapable or unwilling to learn is hardly our fault now.

“The idea that British “culture” is somehow opposite to the presence of ethnic minorities is a historical nonsense. Many of our most iconic cultural traditions are the products of immigration – such as fish and chips, an innovation of Jewish refugees from Portugal. Roads and cities were built by the Romans, banks were founded by Hugenots, a royal household established by a broad cross-section of European aristocracy. There were Africans in Britain, it’s now widely accepted, before there were any “English”.”

Which shows that we have a flexible attitude to culture, we adapt the good bits and reject the bad, which is probably why we are still a rich country and not some 3rd world shithole.

  3. An authority on British culture – Ghanaian descent, born in Norway and raised within the London diaspora.

  4. And where it is otherwise, we are accused of appropriating the culture of others! Doh!

White Jewish refugees from Portugal. I expect she does not mean Portugal. White Romans. White Hugenots. A White Royal family. If there were Africans in Britain before the English – and the British population was genetically unchanged from the Stone Age so that is unlikely – I am pretty sure they were not Black.

Why anyone would care what a half-Jewish, half-African Norwegian-born slip of a girl has to say about the English or England is beyond me. She once wrote an article about how her parents generation left Africa and now “we are going back”.

    If only.

  6. It confirms what we all know, that “British culture” is perceived as something white.

I defy anyone to name a single non-White person who made the slightest contribution to British culture before the 20th century – beyond, of course, making the beds and cleaning the floors.

Some of the anti-slavery narratives perhaps.

  7. It confirms what we all know, that “British culture” is perceived as something white.

    and superior.

  8. It confirms what we all know, that “British culture” is perceived as something white.

    And?

  9. Oh, and note the scare quotes around “British culture”. You would never see them in the Guardian around “Black culture” or “African culture”.

They really just cannot help themselves.

  10. SMFS – you daft racist. Mary Seacole invented nursing, and compassion, and she was as black as a regular cast member on DESMOND’S

  11. There were Africans in Britain, it’s now widely accepted, before there were any “English”.

Afro-scholars and Nigonometricians are divided over whether our superior ebony forerunners arrived in early helicopters or spaceships styled after the Pyramids, before the thrice-accursed white man stole their Science.

  12. “a half-Jewish, half-African Norwegian-born slip of a girl”

Or, as Hitler would’ve put it, Bonus Round!

    I’ll get me coat.

  13. I wonder what colour the cultures of various African countries are.

Perhaps that’s revealed in a follow-up article. Does it say anything about a follow-up article?

  14. wat dabney – “I wonder what colour the cultures of various African countries are.”

Grey. Rocks don’t come in many different colours.

I am so disappointed that Afua is depriving Africa of all that cultural enrichment she could provide, if only she escaped the deep racist patriarchal structures of the West and took refuge in her homeland!

  15. We used to have golliwogs in Britain, until the attitudes of blacks shamed us into stopping this.

The Turks I know are absolutely appalled at the government’s policy of accepting 2m Syrians and other assorted Arabs, distributing them all over major cities where they are proving to be a pain in the arse, and putting them on a path to having voting rights in a few years. Sound familiar?

  17. @ TIS
Mary Seacole was a middle-class Creole, described by an admiorer of her work as “yaller” and by herself as “only a little brown”. Her portrait shows that she could be mistaken for a “white” (pink) woman with a healthy tan.
She didn’t invent nursing, although she did perform a lot of good work, and she *followed* Florence Nightingale to the Crimea.

  18. I cannot tell you how many of my African immigrant business clients have, over the past 16 years, instructed me to make sure the lawyer/insurance agent/banker/etc. I bring to them is white because, if effect: “I want someone who knows what they are doing.”

Once I received a referral to an auto body shop owned by a couple of Ghanaians and the first time we walked through the front door of the shop one of them exclaimed “Oh good! You brought us a white man!”

Not all people of color are impressed with people of color.

  19. @ SMFS
Thousands of Indians, Chinese, Japanese, “native Americans” (i.e. the descendants of pre-Leif Ericsson immigrants), and Sub-Saharan Africans who invented curry, cotton, tea, coffee, gunpowder, tobacco, potatoes, bananas, rubber-tapping …

  20. It starts out bat-sh!t crazy and just got better from there.

Although the author avoids saying so, it appears he’s into the whole Nation of Yahweh/Black Hebrew Israelites thing.

Batshit crazy is putting it mildly.

  21. john77 – what about Edward, the Black Prince?

He won the battles of Crecy and Sidney Poitiers and was the inspiration for Will Smith’s telly career.

  22. A city in the southern Philippines has been attacked by Islamists. At least 46 dead. A cathedral burned. Christians taken hostage and used as human shields. No one is doing that pathetic gesture of turning their landmarks into the Philippines flag.

This pisses me off because the virtue signaling assholes who legture the rest of us clearly don’t give a fuck when it happens to the people they claim to represent.

One of our commentators lives in Mindanao. Hope he’s all good.

  23. A city in the southern Philippines has been attacked by Islamists. At least 46 dead. A cathedral burned. Christians taken hostage and used as human shields.

Corbyn blames their participation in the War on Terror.

  24. DJ: It also lends the lie to the whole “moderate Moslems” bullshit. You don’t just send up the bat signal and get 100+ Islamofascists to down tools and go jihaddin’. That needs population-level support (Mao’s fish and the sea). I hope Duterte goes spastic.

  25. A city in the southern Philippines has been attacked by Islamists. At least 46 dead. A cathedral burned. Christians taken hostage and used as human shields. No one is doing that pathetic gesture of turning their landmarks into the Philippines flag.

Meanwhile the Pope is lecturing Trump on global warming. In Egypt a load of Coptic Christians have been massacred. When the Pope was in Egypt last month he said nothing about the Copts and instead praised Islam. Christianity is fucked.

  26. “the British population was genetically unchanged from the Stone Age”: not so, according to the latest ancient DNA study. We are about 90% Bronze Age immigrants. It’s a stunning result: I wonder whether it’ll stand up to the test of time.

  27. Always fascinates me. The British Isles are a group of islands in the Atlantic. Accessible only by long sea crossings. Apart from a short stretch in the south east which is just about visible from France. That crossing being dominated on its British side by virtually unscaleable cliffs. No-one doubts the claims of the Scots & Irish to be ethnically separate & distinct. The Welsh..we’d better not go there. Genetically. The woollybacks ‘n that. But for some reason, the English are reckoned to be more mongrel than any Central European nation, seen more changes of ownership than a pass-the-parcel in a Belfast pub.
    Most odd.

  28. @ TIS
Charles II was known as “the black boy” and contributed more to British culture than “the Black Prince” who ruled Aquitaine (rather well, by all accounts).

  29. john77 – “Nevertheless, she is indubitably an answer to SMFS’ challenge.”

No she isn’t. Considering that pretty much all she did was make the beds and clean the floors. And contributed nothing to pre-20th century British culture.

I read TIS with a lot more irony than you have.

john77 – “Thousands of Indians, Chinese, Japanese, “native Americans” (i.e. the descendants of pre-Leif Ericsson immigrants), and Sub-Saharan Africans who invented curry, cotton, tea, coffee, gunpowder, tobacco, potatoes, bananas, rubber-tapping …”

Gunpowder I will grant. Curry was probably invented by Europeans in India. The word is certainly not Indian in its use and words like Vindaloo are entirely European. The rest? You mean we took some food crops from the Third World? Not a big contribution there, is it?

Surreptitious Evil – “That’s distinctly heavy on the fuckwit scale. What were you searching for to end up there?”

I am afraid you will have to narrow it down a little. So many of my comments are intended to be heavy on the f*ckwit scale it is hard to know which one you mean.

  30. I cannot point out her errors on “Comment is Free” because it is closed for comment. Start with the implication that the Mahdiists, the forerunners of IS, were not savages; followed bythe claim that the British Empire was, like the Chinese one, founded on a belief of the inferiority of the subjugated people whereas it was founded by British colonists and fighting the French; that the Armenian Genocide is one of the least recognised atrocities – that she has heard of it disproves that in a second – while the maltreatment of the Rohingya Muslim minority in Burma by the “Buddhist” majority is widely ignored because many westerners cannot conceive of Muslims being persecuted by “peaceful” Buddhists; the discriminate slaughter of non-communist village chiefs in South Vietnam by the VietCong was only revealed to readers of the “Daily Worker”; there are many atrocities of which *I* an unaware.
Aparently only one-quarter think immigrants take away jobs from residents – so do the other three-quarters think that they come here for a holiday? [For avoidance of doubt I think it is in our interest, as well as theirs, for the vast majority of foreign students to come here to study: all those I have met (fortunately I never met Tariq Ali) satisfy that criterion]. The Scots, Irish, Cornish and the Welsh are ethnic minorities – my father was mostly Welsh, but I have no idea why he was a threat to “British culture” unless it was because he worked too bloody hard (anathema to the Grauniad) and died too young as a side-effect.
Stop now before I start swearing.

  31. Christianity is fucked.

Only the Catholic Church, really. And didn’t Nostradamus predict that this guy would be the last Pope?

SJWs have infiltrated the church the way they have pretty much every centralized organization. This is pretty much fatal for Catholicism, but my Christian acquaintances in other sects are just abandoning their old SJW-infested church and starting new ones.
