Sigh, yes it is

As his city mourns two men who were killed after confronting a man screaming anti-Muslim slurs, Mayor Ted Wheeler is calling on federal officials to block what he called “alt-right demonstrations” from happening in downtown Portland, Ore.

His concern is that the two rallies, both scheduled in June, will escalate an already volatile situation in Portland by peddling “a message of hatred and of bigotry.” Although the organizers of the rallies have a constitutional right to speak, “hate speech is not protected by the First Amendment,” Wheeler told reporters.

Yes, yes it is. The Supreme Court has ruled on it a number of times and that’s the end of that.

  1. Portland’s an interesting case study in how fast everything goes to shit when virtue-signalling SJW’s gain power.

For example, as a result of their do-gooders,, it’some a magnet for handout-seeking homeless people. There’s even a massive Third World style homeless camp there now.

The latest bright idea is to house them in tents in people’s back gardens.

Consider the level of dangerous delusion on display here:

Becca and Kelly Love, Portland residents who are considering putting a pod in their backyard, told the AP they understood the effects of rising rents in the city.

“Just because you don’t have housing, it doesn’t make you a bad person or more likely to be a bad tenant,” Becca Love said to the AP. “In fact, you’d be a better tenant because you’d appreciate it. We’ve been trying to think of a way to help out in our community because we do have privilege … but we didn’t know what to do.”

This is comparable to the stupidity of those noodle-armed have-a-go heroes who thought it’d be a good idea to tackle a ranting loony, who was built like a brick shithouse and had one of those faces off Crimewatch, on a train.

Because you know who else was homeless?

    Jeremy Christian.

  2. I’ll bet Becca and Kelly Love, those haters of rising rents, support every brain-dead local policy that discourages the building of more housing–housing that would help alleviate that tight market. I’ve not researched it, but feel confident in guessing that Portland has such policies.

  3. Dunno Gene, though quite likely they have the usual barrage of restrictions, red tape and whatnot so beloved of the left.

They’ve also had huge influxes of immigrants – illegal Mexicans and Central Americans who’ll live 20 to a house – and hordes of Indians and East Asians working in the tech industry on H1B visas, as well as people from the rest of the US.

That has pushed rents up, and the local soft-touch approach to vagrants has attracted even more panhandlers. It’s not as bad as San Francisco, from what I hear, but pretty damn bad.

The response of local liberals has been what you’d expect of idiots: ongoing agitation for rent controls and the council recently declaring itself a “sanctuary city”, i.e. they’re openly trying to defy federal immigration law.

Funny how none of the national or international news reports thought to mention Jeremy Christian is a homeless guy tho. I had to search the local news for that nugget.

Even the mayor doesn’t seem to think/care about the connection between having 4,000 homeless people – who are notorious for drug, mental health and violent behaviour problems – packed into a small city the size of Glasgow and one of them murdering a couple of his constituents.

That would be badthink. Better to feebly mewl about the ‘alt-Right’.

  4. People who complain about influxes of immigrants forget that we in England are a nation of immigrants, such as the Vikings, Romans and Normans. And in each of those cases, after just a few decades of violence and bloodshed, everything sort of settled down and a couple of centuries later it was if the immigrants had always lived here.

I’ll bet by the year 2250 the people of Englandistan will be wondering what the fuss was all about.

  5. Andrew – Kek.

I’ve always felt terribly sorry for ‘Arold and the Saxons. By all accounts they were cool dudes with long hair and moustaches like my dad at a Jethro Till concert circa 1975.

  6. In other news, I still can’t work out how to turn off autocorrect on this bloody phone

  7. Laird has an interesting comment on the ‘1st amendment doesn’t support hate speech’ argument on this post at Samizdata.

Basically his point is that the left will keep asserting this lie as a fact until most people accept it and then the judges will ‘go along with public opinion’ and the first amendment will be history.

  8. All of Kalifonia just about needs to be put under military occupation.

I’m sure Trump could privatise the job. UN Peacekeepers, White Helmets, Nigerian Army, Pakistani troops –contingents could be sent in from all over the 3rd World and take Europe’s migrants with them as auxiliaries .

After a couple of years under such new controllers white Kalifornian leftists will have reached a level of self-abasement and social justice few of them could ever have even imagined achieving on their own.

  9. “All of Kalifonia just about needs to be put under military occupation.”

Possibly true. However, Portland is in Oregon.

  10. ‘will escalate an already volatile situation in Portland’

Liar. There is nothing volatile in Portland.

It’s a stupid lie; everyone can see it’s not true.

  11. Oregon – isn’t that the State that was whites-only until well into the 20th century? No slavery, but no free blacks either.

  12. AndrewC
DNA shows that the invaders didn’t in fact wipe out the aborigines of England or Wales.

Historians have been arguing about tech transfer or population transfer, but the evidence from dead people is now in.

  13. Well it certainly does protect hate speech if it is wishing an unpleasant death for Thatcher, Bush, the 1 pc, white people, blokes…

    +1

I was going to post same about AndrewC being wrong

(I’m actually in Filey as I type, not that there were mines around here, but lots of static caravans where miners went on holiday.)

  16. Is there such a thing as an anti-Muslim slur? Islam is an evil, barbaric, homophobic, misogynistic cult. To be a practicing Muslim implies complete ignorance or acquiescence with the evil that is Islam, so it is difficult to see how one can be maligned.

  17. I’ll bet Becca and Kelly Love, those haters of rising rents, support every brain-dead local policy that discourages the building of more housing–housing that would help alleviate that tight market. I’ve not researched it, but feel confident in guessing that Portland has such policies.

Having friends who’ve moved to Portland, I do know something about this subject… Portland has, for decades, actively discouraged development via zoning restrictions and the like. In fact, Portland is rather notorious for it.

  18. To be a practicing Muslim implies complete ignorance or acquiescence with the evil that is Islam, so it is difficult to see how one can be maligned.

Well, DocBud, when one is as stupid and ignorant as you are, it is surely difficult to see anything beyond your own navel. Then again, when your view of the world comes from standing over a French fry basket and a vat of hot oil eight hours a day…

  19. You so funny, DtP, you should tour northern clubs.

Mohammed was an evil shit, he was a pedophile, a misogynist, a thief, a slave owner and a brutal murderer. He invented his cult, just as Jim Jones and David Koresh did, as a means of controlling his people. As a reward for their obedience, he allowed his followers to rape their slaves.

Anyone who still follows this self-evidently fabricated cult in the 21st century is either completely ignorant or happily goes along with its evil, false nature for personal benefit. Surely no intelligent person believes that there is a god called Allah or that a bastard like Mohammed was his chosen prophet.

  21. I agree with DocBud.

Islamophobia – an unreasonable fear of someone with a book that says he should kill you.

  22. The Inimitable Steve – “Portland’s an interesting case study in how fast everything goes to shit when virtue-signalling SJW’s gain power.”

Actually I would like to respectfully disagree. Portland proves the importance of what we are always told is irrelevant – race. Much of the Pacific North-West is run by left wing loons. The Democrats have been in power for generations in most of these cities. In places like Portland and Seattle the alternative is usually someone even further to the Left.

But like Norway or Sweden, they are still very nice places to live. The reason seems to be race. White Leftist sh!tholes are worse than White Right wing sh!tholes, but real dysfunction requires non-Whites. Portland is not Detroit. It is not Baltimore.

  23. DtP: what is moronic about being suspicious of a political and religious movement which has the stated aim of wiping out all other such systems and making the world a monocultural bloc, run according to the barbaric writings of a long dead paedophile, slaver and warlord?

Seems a reasonable precaution not to embrace such a vision with open arms?

Are you maybe one of the looney bearded medieval guys?

  24. “But like Norway or Sweden, they are still very nice places to live. The reason seems to be race. White Leftist sh!tholes are worse than White Right wing sh!tholes, but real dysfunction requires non-Whites. Portland is not Detroit. It is not Baltimore.”

White people don’t tend as much to casual violence, predatory behaviour, and don’t kill each other as much as black people and some other racial groups. Who knows why this is, whether cultural or genetic, but it is observable.

  25. It took 1600 years from the foundation of Christianity to get the the Reformation and chucking out of the nonsense created by the Institution rather than the religeon and the adaptation to the modern world. It’s currently Islam Year 1485, so it looks like we’re still at least a century until an Islamic Reformation and the stripping out of the Institution accretions and reformulation to the modern world.

  26. Anon,

Islam could piggyback off Western civilisation if it chose to and take the fast lane to a modern civilisation. Instead it chooses to destroy it in favour of its inferior, barbaric alternative.

  27. However, Portland is in Oregon.

Maine, too. The one in Portland was named after the one in Maine, after a flip of a coin. Had it gone the other way it would have been called Boston.

  28. Islam could piggyback off Western civilisation if it chose to and take the fast lane to a modern civilisation.

To be fair to the Mullahs, they might take one look at the Guardian, Everyday Feminism, the output of Laurie Penny and the arguments over trannies and toilets and decide modern civilisation isn’t going to last much longer.
