Whut?

The reality of working in a factory making clothes for Ivanka Trump’s label has been laid bare, with employees speaking of being paid so little they cannot live with their children, anti-union intimidation and women being offered a bonus if they don’t take time off while menstruating.

Decades and decades of the insistence that menstruation doesn’t mean that women can’t do the work and now they’re claiming this is an imposition?

  1. No Tim. You had it all wrong. Those women rollerblading on Tv were on menstruation leave. You merely thought they could do anything but they could only play squash or other active sports. They weren’t working!

  2. “The workers’ complaints come only a week after labour activists investigating possible abuses at a Chinese factory that makes Ivanka Trump shoes disappeared into police custody.”

Clear instruction here for the Indonesian police!

  3. in the company i work we don’t offer women a bonus if they don’t take time of during menstruation. we just expect them to show up unless sick

  4. The workers’ complaints come only a week after labour activists investigating possible abuses at a Chinese factory that makes Ivanka Trump shoes disappeared into police custody.

The activists’ group claimed they had uncovered a host of violations at the plant including salaries below China’s legal minimum wage, managers verbally abusing workers and “violations of women’s rights”.

One of these shoe factories was in Dongguan so there’s a chance I’ve been there, unless she was having them made in some of the really dodgy ones.

The thing about China labour laws are that they are probably more strict than most developed countries’. The local government will however happily turn a blind eye to people breaking the regulations. A smart brand polices the factories themselves so they can hopefully prevent this bad press or at least be able to show some due diligence.

Obviously foreign businesses such as ours have to be so careful to follow everything to the letter, which of course pisses off all the officials who are after a kick-back.

    “Fetch the comfy chair!”

What this means is that factory workers move from rural areas to relatively expensive industrial/urban areas to work in a factory, but can’t afford to house the whole family nearby. Which is the same principle as buying a house in Swindon and commuting to London, or living in Wales and doing weekend commuting to London.

Tsk! Surely this is just a cultural trait, one to be admired along with wife beating, FGM, etc? Or is the writer saying these brown/yellow folk need educating in white man’s ways?

  8. I identify as a menstruating woman.
    But I’ll come into work.

Can I have my bonus retrospectively? In cash?
