Difficult to take this seriously really, isn’t it?

So, I said the economically obvious thing, India needs fewer people doing peasant agriculture and more doing manufacturing and services. That’s just how a country develops.

I am criticised with a concatenation of non sequiturs. Perhaps the best of which is this:

A cursory look at the global economic scenario will make it amply clear that Worstall’s advice is totally misguided. The world economy is stagnant or contracting. Real wages have been stagnant for decades. Consumption is at an all-time low.

Are these people even phoning this in from our own universe?

There’s the added joy that they seem to think I support EU and US farm subsidies. And they make that wondrous mistake about farm productivity. Which is to insist that low input farming is more productive per acre. Sure it is, or at least it can be. But it’s much less productive per hour of human labour, which is what determines the living standards of the farmers.

Sheesh, I mean really, sheesh.

  1. These people are loonies though aren’t they? They may have a website with ‘research’ in the name but they are still loonies.

Hilariously, the loonies have this as a crosshead:

    Ideology masquerading as economic theory

  2. Trotting out the usual lefty right-on hard-of-thinking crap – it’s hard to know where to start.

Trouble is that is the level of shite that is being poured into the ears and brains of people via the BBC and te vast majority of the mass media (even the so-called right wing media would never die in a ditch to protect free markets and competitive markets).

And that is what we are up against.

As long as it wsa just the BBC and the dead tree press we still had a chance. Now it is social media as well which is even more right on, woolly minded and illiberal.

    We are fucked.

  3. I like that their picture to illustrate “agrochemicals” in the context of nasty multinationals foisting them on poor farmers, is of two blokes walking around a paddy field with hand-sprayers on their backs.

Because yeah, this is how it’s done on a large scale.

  4. Social media is just stupidity talking to stupidity.

Anyone whose opinion is formed by social media is so stupid as to be a danger to themselves.

The low level of education is the issue and that exists because of a low level of intelligence. Most have little pleasure from the use of their mind.

If most used their minds a tenth as much as the used their sex organs the world would be a vastly better place.

  5. “Sheesh, I mean really, sheesh”

I take it that “sheesh” is an American euphemism for “shit”. Old fashioned farming is largely about shit.

  6. — “Worstall and Ahlwalia’s thinking stems from a neoliberal economic agenda that aims to funnel income from the poor to the super rich…”

    — “Tim Worstall is a fellow of the Adam Smith Institute based in London. The ASI was a major intellectual driving force that underpinned Margaret Thatcher’s ideological assault on ordinary people in the UK…”

I must stop there because the whole site appears to be nothing but of collection of uploaded teenage scribblings. Something for spotty Che Guevaras to do between bouts of shameful masturbation. I think my favourite thus far is a piece entitled “The Looting Machine Called Capitalism.”

  7. I can’t seem to find the comments to this ridiculous article… Where should I be looking?

“sheesh” is more likely a corruption of Jesus, just as “Oh my gosh!” is also avoiding potential blasphemy.

  8. It’s hard to tell if this is just free-range left wing craziness or Soros funded left wing craziness. He finds a lot of AstroTurf organisations spouting shit like this.

The content fails by itself of course despite the “who pays” angle.

  9. Ah. Maybe I misunderstood. I don’t think there are any comments. Just to avoid an sense polluting their web-site….

  10. “And they make that wondrous mistake about farm productivity. Which is to insist that low input farming is more productive per acre. Sure it is, or at least it can be. But it’s much less productive per hour of human labour, which is what determines the living standards of the farmers.”

I have constant arguments online with other farmers about this – some people just can’t see that just because one peasant tending 1 acre can produce more grain from that acre than a farmer using a modern equipment can produce per acre while farming 1000 acres, it doesn’t follow that peasant farming is more efficient than large scale modern agriculture.

This despite the fact that almost to a man they will be farming more land than their fathers, using larger scale equipment. And have no intention of becoming peasant farmers tending a small plot. Yet they still argue such activity is ‘more efficient’ than their own activities.

The lack of knowledge of economics is frightening. Then again it is farmers who have been sheltered from normal economic forces by subsidies for so long its virtually ingrained in their DNA – you’d have to go back 3 generations or more to find a farmer who had experience of unsubsidised agriculture.

  11. Colin Todhunter is amusing. I had this exchange on Twitter: he’s since deleted his reply.

    @CRG_CRM @Colin_Todhunter He’s read your piece, & is unimpressed. Correctly so. timworstall.com/2017/06/15/dif…

  12. Rob, the .ca domain is one of those new gTLDs like .blog.

    Stands for Complete Arsehole, apparently.

  13. “sheesh” is more likely a corruption of Jesus, just as “Oh my gosh!” is also avoiding potential blasphemy.

Oh my giddy aunt! Why avoid it? My view is that blasphemy is a form of prayer – you hit your thumb with a hammer and the very first thing that occurs to you is to raise your voice to the Lord. How is that not worship?

  14. .ca is Canada. Not as loony as California in general, unless Trudeau infects them all, but they have their exceptions, like this site.
