What? We have anti free speech protestors now?

Thousands of counter-protesters crammed Boston Common and marched through city streets on Saturday morning in efforts to drown out the planned “free speech” rally

Interesting, no?

Well, OK, it is indeed free speech either way but it’s an odd thing to be demonstrating against.

  1. The legacy press covers the counter protestors, not a word about the actual rally. Cos that’s what the news is.

  2. “The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one’s time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.” (H. L. Mencken)

  3. I have no sympathy for either mob, But I’m a bit more optimistic than you, Tim. I don’t think the US is going to abolish the First Amendment at the behest of a few snowflakes.

The EU, on the other hand…

  4. Dear Mr Worstall

Protesting against free speech is a bit Catch 22. Presumably if they turn violent they’ll have to beat themselves up; might even knock some sense into themselves … nope, won’t happen. Though they could learn something from Colin ‘Bomber’ Harris:

  5. Let’s hope we’re reaching peak idiocy because this is looking ever more apt.:

“Everyone in the world is quite mad, except for me and thee. And sometimes I have my doubts about thee.”

  6. The enemy always uses the laws of a free society to claim protection, right up until they gain power. Then law becomes whatever they say it is.

  7. The First Amendment is not going to be abolished…officially. But the left reserves the right to unleash its antifa goons on anyone they consider hateful. And they have a rather expansive (and ever shifting) definition of that term. Furthermore, their allies in the tech industry – Google, Facebook, Paypal, etc – can make anyone who doesn’t toe the line a virtual unperson. Land of the free, indeed!

  8. “I don’t think the US is going to abolish the First Amendment”: that’s not how it works. You just need the courts to re-interpret it, in the way – for example – that they found an entirely spurious right to privacy in the Constitution because that suited the spirit of the times, at least amongst the Washington establishment.

And now, of course, there’s little mention of that supposed right while the US Securitate records all your phone conversations and e-mails.

  9. “But the left reserves the right to unleash its antifa goons on anyone they consider hateful.”

    Anyone THEY hate.

“And now, of course, there’s little mention of that supposed right while the US Securitate records all your phone conversations and e-mails.”

That’s 4th Amendment. Which, yes, they are violating wholesale.

  10. “They’re anti white supremacy, not anti free speech.”

    Bullshit. From the Guardian;

“Another counter-protester, who gave his name only as Paul, told the Guardian: “Well, he is not wrong. Our generation has been radicalized by police murdering people of color. And cops shut down a massive section of Boston and protected about 25 rightwingers while 45,000 people joined counter-protests.

“I think for a lot of people it’s clear what side the police are on. It wasn’t on the side of the people protesting white nationalists even though Marty Walsh [the mayor of Boston] talked tough earlier in the week.””

25 people protected from ‘45,000’ and the police are not on the right side eh?

“TV cameras showed a group of boisterous counter-protesters on the Common chasing a man with a Trump campaign banner and cap, shouting and swearing at him. But other counter-protesters intervened and helped the man safely over a fence into the area where the conservative rally was to be staged. Black-clad counter-protesters also grabbed an American flag out of an elderly woman’s hands, and she stumbled and fell to the ground.”

Boisterous? If the roles were reversed, would the Guardian use the word boisterous?

  11. Free speech has been under attack for some time in the UK Europe and the states, the liberal left have a stranglehold on opinion, and anything free speech or otherwise is deemed to be the “wrong sort of” if it doesn’t fit the particular narrative.

  12. What’s the solution to speech you think is abhorrent? Exercising your own right to free speech to disagree with it. Isn’t that what the counter protestors are doing?

  13. Matthew L: “What’s the solution to speech you think is abhorrent? Exercising your own right to free speech to disagree with it. Isn’t that what the counter protestors are doing?”

Oh, look. Grima Wormtongue showed up.

  14. Neo-nazis and the Ku-Klux Klan march on the streets of the USA, and, according to Tim and most of his commentators, the only issue is that some people have the temerity to demonstrate against them.

First Amendment rights, yes. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t recognize evil when it takes to the streets.

  15. SJW,

The KKK is an evil organisation, but Antifa and BLM are no less evil. There is much harm being done to basic freedoms by politicians and the MSM suggesting that there is something virtuous in left wing thuggery and being horrified that someone should dare to condemn equally violent thugs of any hue.

  16. It’s just theatre from both sides now. What is it The Last Psychiatrist says about men going where the power is? You see any MLKs or manly Jarrow men there?

Women and betas go where there is the illusion of trappings of power. They take well-trodden, low competition routes.

Trump and Farage achieved their objectives without much marching.

  17. @SJW

‘Neo-nazis and the Ku-Klux Klan march on the streets of the USA, and, according to Tim and most of his commentators, the only issue is that some people have the temerity to demonstrate against them.’

That is a thoroughly dishonest smear, but then you are a leftist.

  18. SJW,

The counter march isn’t the problem, it’s the use of the heckler’s veto and double standards used by the left that I object to.

  19. The whole thing’s absolutely glorious. The left are fully engaged in legitamising the far right with the general public. Expect a further lurch to the right in the next elections.

  20. @BiS – yes I think you’re right. That is why they are trying so hard to close down “right wing” blogs and to demonise Conservative/Republican/libertarian figureheads – it is absolutely crucial for them that they carry out this takeover (which is basically what it is) in as secret a manner as possible.

  21. I do feel sorry for lefties, they utterly despise the white working class, even those who vote left of centre because they are still socially conservative and resentful of their neighbourhoods being overrun with immigrants, but they still need their votes. Such a dilemma, on the one hand you want to be able to label them the deplorables you believe them to be, whereas the other hand needs to shake their hands, while breathing through the mouth, in order to ask for their votes.

  22. SJW–YOU are evil.

You support, endorse and attempt to advance a cause that has murdered 150 million people and ruined the lives of hundreds of millions more.

YOU are every bit as evil as any “Nazi” or “KKK” creep.

You don’t acknowledge that fact –because you are sanctimonious as well as evil but that doesn’t alter the fact.

If the KKK deserve their heads kicking in–so do you.

  23. “But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t recognize evil when it takes to the streets.”

Picketed any mosques lately? Muslims are actually killing people.

  24. ‘First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.’

I’m not a Nazi, but I’ll still defend their rights. Because MY RIGHTS are next.

  25. Gamecock,

To the likes of Antifa, if you are not with them then you are a Nazi. The righteousness of their thuggery should be self-evident to all and anyone who stands in the way of them cracking a few Nazi heads, including the police doing their job for a change, is clearly a Nazi them self.

  26. Interested,

You misunderstand. I am saying it is all a sideshow. A few people are exploiting it for financial gain, like Milo, but this isn’t real politics.

It’s like “campus freedom of speech”. It mattered in the 1950s when ideas were exchanged by someone coming to a hall, but you can reach more people posting something on YouTube today. This activity only exists to create friction that creates headlines that eventually sells books. Milo turns up, says Trump is great. Protesters ban him. Students in Wet Fart Studies who now feel they’ve achieved some pointless, symbolic victory. And then a bunch of basement dwelling libertarians with nothing else to do come out against them. The news media talks it up because people beating the shit out of each other or holding racist flags is easy, entertaining work.

  27. The Internet is vastly more powerful than a few basement Libertarians. Ask Fararge and Trump.

And the left have opened fire on Net freedom –through corporate socialist trash like Zuckerberg and the twat running Google.

  28. Bloke in Swindon,

You’re going to have to move. Bloke in Spain got here first so is entitled to be addressed as BiS. How about Basingstoke?

  29. Agreed, DocBud. Declaring Nazis evil is a Leftist distraction. Of course they are evil, but that is not the issue. It is a cover for the anti human rights Left.

The Left is anti free speech and against the right of assembly. Yet they are proud, even sanctimonious, about their evil.

  30. Mr Ecks,

Yes, it is. My point is, most people don’t have time to do this pointless crap. People attending protests are people with massive amounts of spare time. Basically, losers.

The net is where the real flow of information and ideas is. Everything else now is just some baroque bullshit.

  31. DocBud,

    Fair point.

I would go Wessex, but there’s Bloke in Wales. I will go for Bloke on M4.

  32. BonM4, you might want to be careful there, they’re turning the M4 into a smart motorway like the M3 so you’re going to get lane closures, night closures and weekend closures for the next 3 or 4 years so you could have trouble getting in and out.

  33. SJW: “the temerity to demonstrate against them”

    I’m with Interested.

Let us know when and where you’ll next be in a public place so those of us who don’t like your opinions can have the temerity to gather up some black masks, bats, rocks, brass knuckles, flame-throwers and piss bottles and “demonstrate” against you.

  34. The video of Charlottesville someone posted here showed that most of the far-right demonstrators were armed.

According to the Government Accountability Office of the United States, 73% of violent extremist incidents that resulted in deaths since September 12, 2001 were caused by right-wing groups.

There is no moral equivalence between demonstrating in favour of racist violence, which is what nazis and the KKK believe in, and demonstrating against it.

In my opinion first and second amendment rights should not be exercised together. If you want to join me in opposing people carrying clubs at demonstrations, then we agree on something – any takers?

What could and should Germans have done to stop the rise to power of the Nazis?

  35. SJW: There is no moral equivalence between demonstrating in favour of racist violence, which is what nazis and the KKK believe in, and demonstrating against it.

You’ve highlighted your problem here perfectly: you are fixated on the labels whereas the moral equivalence is to be found between one lot of thugs and another lot of thugs.

  36. Exactly, TMB. Antifa declares themselves anti fascist, and proceeds as fascist as they could possibly be. Lefties are easily fooled by it.

  37. “According to the Government Accountability Office of the United States, 73% of violent extremist incidents that resulted in deaths since September 12, 2001 were caused by right-wing groups.”
I’d love to know what the GOA’s definition of a “violent extremist group” is. Why do I suspect that the street riots in America’s cities are perpetrated by individuals of no known affiliation. Whilst there’s a presumtion that any individual present in, say, Charlottesville & not protesting against the march (for the protesters were all accidentally there in their capacity as individual capacities, weren’t they?) must be affiliated to a far right group?

  38. “What could and should Germans have done to stop the rise to power of the Nazis?”
You’re talking about the immediate post WW1 period? The clear & present danger was the rise to power of the communists.

  39. All forms of socialism must be destroyed.

None of the armed open fire despite leftist cunts wielding clubs and a home-made flame-thrower.

No answers to your equivalence of evil SJW?

    What a surprise.

  40. Mary Barnes=Richard Bonner=Michael Less

One lone freak battling alone against the forces of National Socialism–even tho’ his fucking keyboard has been shot from under him by those evil NAZis.

  41. We have the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei vs the Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands all over again.

  42. I submit that “Nazi” has no meaning. Like “Climate Change.”

It is a reification fallacy. A strawman.

Everyone hates Nazis. So the Left calls everyone Nazis, and attacks. It is stupid and cheesy. And, apparently, successful.
