Joe, Joe Biden?

Former Vice President Joe Biden, speaking to students at Rutgers University, took shots at disgraced film executive Harvey Weinstein over recent sexual assault revelations.

Biden called Weinstein’s conduct “disgusting” and “immoral” and also urged Hollywood’s powerful men to stand up and speak out against such actions.

Haven’t we all just spent decades making fun of Joe’s propensity to lay hands upon any passing woman?

Different in degree, to be sure, but not in kind in the modern definition.

  1. And lefties assume that non-lefties are awful misogynistic abusers cos…. so many of the lefty great and good are such.

Since they’re the good guys, the rest of us must by definition be worse, right?

“We need to talk to our sons about…” No, YOU need to talk to YOUR sons about it. Ours are quite fine.

  2. Further to last: holding people like Clinton up as models might, yes, indeed, mean that you need to have a difficult talk with your sons…

  3. Is there not a bit of a theme in sexual matters, Left vs Right? Don’t we tend to see utterly caddish (but entirely consensual) behaviour from the Right (think Alan Clark, and any number of Tory MPs caught shagging away from home) vs more nonconsensual/abuse of position behaviour from the Left (think Weinstein, Clinton, Rennard, Weiner etc)?

  4. @Jim – yes, indeed.

To repeat myself slightly, I often think that the Left form their twisted opinions about the Right by simply looking at what goes on on their side and assuming that we must be worse. Cos they’re good and we’re bad. According to them… This applies in all spheres – have you ever noticed how lefties behave when they become bosses, for instance? They behave according to how *their* propaganda paints bosses.

  5. In my view it isn’t the proposition that is dodgy behaviour, it would be a refusal to accept ‘No’ as the answer.

  6. Excavator Man–It isn’t yet clear that he did refuse to accept No as an answer.

Four of them may now be saying he raped them but we will never actually know if that actually means they said Yes and now see a chance for revenge and–even more important publicity/sympathy. An adult agreeing to a proposition –no matter how sleazy– is NOT rape by any definition of the word that is not specifically designed water-muddying Marxist femminist evil.

I think the assumption of goodness is the nub of the matter. One can self justify all manner of immoral behaviour if you have a prior assumption that you are one of the ‘the good guys’. And indeed excuse it in others.

Its interesting, I’m trying to think of a Right wing example of a Clinton, Weinstein, or Assange etc, and I can’t bring one to mind. Lots of nasty affairs that broke up marriages and families, consorting with prostitutes (Profumo), but nothing where there was a hint the actual sex wasn’t consensual.
