Women lawyers at a leading human rights chambers have complained of sexual harassment, comments and innuendo from senior male colleagues, according to a secret internal report.
The independent review of how Matrix Chambers handled a serious sexual misconduct allegation found “institutional failings”, including a lack of support for the woman in the case when she was distressed and in ill health.
The revelations come amid warnings about the difficulties that women lawyers face in confronting harassment. A group of barristers calling themselves Behind The Gown say sexual harassment “is endemic in our profession”.
The report into Matrix, by the retired judge Dame Laura Cox, said that some of the actions of senior management at the chambers had been “wholly inappropriate” in a harassment case.
