  1. I know the author, he lives across the road from my late father’s house in Edinburgh. He’s a nut for anything on the Royal Scots and his house is full of material on them.

  2. When I played my rugby on Wednesday afternoons I used to watch Hibs on a Saturday more often than Hearts because at the time Hibs played the better football. It was the era when a team would often field a chubby chappie, or even two, in midfield who would be noticeably skilful and therefore make the team good to watch.

  3. “Herts is how Edinburghers pronounce it.” That’s because “hert” is how one pronounces “heart”. Or did in the school playground.

    Herts is how Edinburghers pronounce it.

    Not any I’ve spoken with, they all pronounce Hearts as harts. Unlke the puzzling Hoburn and Toaster.
