Guess it beats them all signing up for forensic science

Female leads in popular crime drama series on television has encouraged a surge in women signing up to become detectives with Britain’s largest police force.

Two ways to look at it. Those arguing about role models have a point. Or women are taking life decisions on whatever grot has just passed across the TV screen. Your choice.

  1. From memory, when Angie Dickinson’s “Police Woman” went out in in the US the 70s there was a huge uptick (from almost zero) in woman applying to be rozzers

  2. I know an academic psychologist who says her courses are filled with girls who all want to be forensic psychologists. Unfortunately for them that’s a tiny market.

  3. Idea: TV show where smart, sassy women give their husbands steak and blowjobs.

See also meeja studies, where all graduates expect to land an assistant producer’s job at the Beeb – a tiny probability given the numbers of students vs positions, and vanishingly small if you’re not a sprog of someone already working at the Beeb.

  5. Solid Steve 2: Squirrels of The Patriots – “Idea: TV show where smart, sassy women give their husbands steak and blowjobs.”

I am enjoying The Handmaid’s Tale. But you know, I don’t think it is going to have the happy ending it is clearly crying out for.

And now that blowing the hiring manager seems to be verboten….

  7. Flatcap

Had I been slightly older and based in the US, the prospect of having a colleague who looked liked Angie Dickinson would have had me signing up for the rozzers. A fantasy of mine

  8. Angie Dickinson in uniform with handcuffs? I think it might have inclined me to resisting arrest.

  9. If Spud thinks McMafia is unvarnished reality and some bod in the grauniad thinks it’s a metaphor for Brexit, then why shouldn’t the flawed and compromised heroines of cop shows act as role models for young women – especially if they all model themselves on Laure Berthaud in Spiral.

  10. Vera whats all that about with her geordie accent….honest the trailers for new series pisses me off ….shite.

You cant beat Midsomer Murders and the horrors which happen at every village fete and meetings of the book club..with the older series 100% ethnic cleansing a promise they keep.

  11. Midsommer was set in an English village and multi-culti scum can’t have that can they? It might give people ideas about not being replaced by overseas imports.

Although Midsommer appears to have had a pigment transfusion you don’t see many Jews there. Maybe because the left don’t like them eh Rickie?

  12. TMB’s reference to Laure Berthaud….I’m glad I’m not alone here-she’s grubby, untidy and has terrible table manners.
But, Oh Boy! Even at my advanced age, she causes unfamiliar sensations in the trouser department.

  13. “According to figures over 4,430 people registered an interest, with 2,733 following up with a full application. In total, 51 per cent of those who made a full application were women.”

What was the gender split of interested folk? You’d expect the Gillian Anderson effect hypothesis to have the most noticeable effect in that group.

  14. There is a Village in North Norfolk, posh “Burnham Market” where Amanda Holden lives where they have eradicated the Norfolk accent along with ethnic types.

I don’t notice jews in series like Midsomer Murders, I did notice when the producers of the show introduced a black fella he was shagging a good number of the posh ladies in the village….a bit of a piss take on the stereotypical big black cock theme in my opinion

  15. Who would have thought showing strong people in a role would encourage others.

When Spooks first came out there was an upsurge in people applying for MI5. Then a hot woman lead was terminated in a very horrific way and the applications reduced to a trickle.

At least with forensics there is a longevity improvement.

  16. I live in Midsomer. Well, on the Ox/Bucks border where it is filmed. Of the actual murders in the immediate area over the last twenty years, the Milton Common body dump was done by a Pole, the Oxfordshire Golf Club beheading by an Albanian and the Thame knifings by a Cypriot. I can’t recall any others. Unless you count Aylesbury..

  17. Laure Berthaud lads?

I know there is no accounting for taste but there are some really low standards on this blog.

  18. The Tutankhamun exhibition of long ago did wonders for Archaeology departments in the Unis. All Creatures Great and Small ditto for the Vet schools.

If Holby City were cancelled applications for Medicine and Nursing would collapse, obvs.

Did William and Harry do wonders for people wanting to drive helicopters? Or perhaps real life can’t compete with the screen.

  19. Ecksie – let’s not quibble: Laure is a peach even if she is a slightly bruised and second-hand peach.

The reality is that whatever the role model, the recruits will turn out more like the prune-faced and hideouly politically correct harridan Ellie Miller in Broadchurch.

Did William and Harry & Meghan do wonders for people wanting to travel economy and pay for two rows of empty seats in front of them & their three bodygaurds? Or perhaps real life can’t compete with the screen hypocrisy.

FTFY – 18 economy seats for 5 peeps.

  21. “The Met has faced a detective recruitment crisis, with a shortage of investigators in CID units, so announced last year it was to become the first in the UK to try the scheme, which means they are not required to do two years in uniform on the beat.”

So, it isn’t really that women watching TV are applying and raising the numbers. It’s that men aren’t applying, but women are, so the ratio shifts that way.

Why might this be happening? Well, maybe, because we’ve killed policing as a “making a difference” job. You nick a villain robbing a house, he’s going to walk. For about the next 20 occasions.

In my experience, men don’t like this. Men like power. Women, on the other hand, like the trappings of power.
