Not a good idea

It is time to call an end to the age when a private contract is the default solution to every public project. It is time to rethink the role of public provision so that it looks more like the rest of Europe. If Labour is overambitious to think always of renationalisation, it is right to say that this must be a watershed.

They all have direct government building of hospitals, do they?

  1. The entire French health service is private. A significant percentage of Swedish hospitals and primary care is privately provided. The German system is privately provided and funded through mandatory insurance. Not a single country in Europe runs a state-owned monolith like the NHS

  2. @Flatcap Army. That’s because the NHS is the Envy of The World and other nations are too shy to copy it. Or something.

So privatisation of the provision of medical services then? Sounds like a good idea.

Says someone who clearly has no idea how public provision is provided in the rest of Europe, and just blithely presumes, without any evidence whatsoever, that it’s provided along the lines he favours.

  5. Perhaps 1764, before division of labor.

Seriously, the government would need a permanent staff of pipe fitters and instrument mechanics and electricians et al. The very idea of the government doing its own projects is ignorant and decadent.

‘It’s clear what went wrong with the giant outsourcing company.’

    Austerity? Wut?

‘Those responsible must pay the penalty’

I point to my above post and suggest the Ecksian gallows for the government’s project managers.

  6. The NHS should be buying their own MRI scanners and x-ray machine. Why are Japanese electronics firms making a profit or of the NHS?

British Rail should build their own trains again too.
