We demand gender justice!

The figures, compiled by Nielsen BookScan and published by The Bookseller, also showed that women dominated literary fiction sales last year.

Nine out of the 10 best-selling literary authors were female, with Haruki Murakami the only male.

Where is the government plan to insist that male authors gain more sales ?

And the first explanation that that’s just the way the market pans out is going to run into something of a brick wall, isn’t it?

  1. But people choose what books they want to buy. That’s free choice.

Wheras society is obviously forcing women to do jobs that women like doing *, so that’s a problem with society.

    * or in the case of pink-collar stuff, at least like doing more than they like doing the sort of useful stuff that men do

  2. Publishing companies are increasingly entirely female. It is hard to find a commissioning editor who is a man. Well, you know, if you exclude those that were *technically* born a man.

I am just amazed that anyone reads literary fiction at all. I am not sure I could name anyone I know who reads high brow fiction any more although many pretend to do so.

The two are almost certainly related.

  3. Newman’s already sold 50 000 copies in a day and has quit his oilman job — he can finally wear his Tom Wolfe-style white suit without getting it greasy — so he doesn’t need the help. Whereas my book does. A stipend would be fine, but I’d prefer the government just to buy, say, a 1000 copies a day.

Yes, and it’s the same with literary agents who are another layer of gatekeepers keeping out nasty male authors who don’t say the right things. My book kept getting rejected by assistants called Lucy who studied English Lit at Wadham, who were never in a million years going to like a campus satire making fun of people like them.

You look at the lists of authors on any literary agency’s webpage and you will see far more female authors than males. (And most of the men on those lists are old guys approaching the end of their careers and lives.)

Also, any man under 50 in a literary agency will be a wimpy left-winger, you can see that by looking at their Twitter pages.

Any man over 50 who reads fiction will be a wimpy left-winger…

  5. Literary authors are frequently supported by patronage (a kept woman?), with employment at a university or similar institution. Men tend to write genre fiction; it sells, they support themselves.
