Interesting….

An Iraqi court condemned to death by hanging a German woman after finding her guilty of belonging to the Islamic State jihadist group.

She is one of hundreds of foreign jihadists held by Iraqi authorities, who in December announced the defeat of Isil after a gruelling three-year battle. She is believed to be the first European woman to be sentenced to death in Iraq in relation to Isil.

The woman, who is of Moroccan origin, was sentenced for providing “logistical support and helping the terrorist group to carry out crimes,” said court spokesman Abdel Settar Bayraqdar.

….definition of European there.

  1. “She is believed to be the first European woman to be sentenced to death in Iraq in relation to Isil.”

Hopefully not the last, wouldn’t want Saint May to run out of council houses.

  2. I often see interesting defintions of European and Arabs/Islam/Muslims.

Husband dressed with the latest branded tee-shirts and jeans with top of the range trainers listening to music from his Iphone

Wife..all in black with a slit in her headgear so she can still follow him about.

  3. Presumably classed as German on the grounds of having a German passport, rather like the doctor who (incompetently) killed a couple of his patients in the UK a couple of years ago, who was described as German because he had the passport, even though he was actually Nigerian.

German citizenship used to be very hard to get, but the process became much easier under Merkel’s predecessor. Germans call these people “Passdeutsche” as opposed to “Bio-Deutsche” (lit. organic Germans).

  4. I’m as racist as the next bloke (Bernard Madding) but plenty of Algerian ladies look like they have some crusader in them. Certainly not fully European, but..

Sadly the reality is that they are remnants of the original population of that region, back when it used to support great civilisations, with a whole lot of dirty Arab mixed in.

  5. The first step to extinguishing the European population is to deny it ever existed.

You do not make someone British by giving them a passport.

  6. My ex-wife was born in China, grew up in Hong Kong, went to university in Taiwan, and has a British passport. I’d argue she was a British as me *before* she got her British passport.

  7. When can we start hanging terrorists and their supporters?

Starting with Corbog, McDonnell and Milne.

  8. Although Assad is undoubtedly an undiluted POS, we can all breathe a bit easier when the last ISIL member has been hanged. At one time ISIL held two thirds of Syria and a third of Iraq. Then Putin stepped in, and Trump got elected. Obama’s America pretended that it was fighting ISIL, while doing nothing of the kind. ISIL still holds pockets of urban territory in Damascus, and have been left to wither on the vine east of Deir-ez-Zor. However an easing of the conflict will only lead to another great wave of immigration into Europe. “Interesting” is hardly the word for it.

  9. This is a problem with the English language.

In the US, someone might describe themselves as German even if their only connection to Germany is that their great-great-grandfather came from there in the 1800s.

But they don’t really mean that they are German. It is just a short-form for “American whose ancestors came from Germany”.

SMFS is right that having a British passport doesn’t make you British, but jgh is also right that some people are British without ever having the passport. This includes white and non-white people.

And on the topic of jgh’s ex-wife, in Chinese it is very easy to describe someone as “German citizen of Moroccan descent” without it sounding unwieldy. In fact that is how this person would have been described in Chinese-language media.
