Murphy gets one right!

Taxing the economy reduces demand and reducing demand when there are people with skills seeking gainful employment is a sin.

So, when we’ve a recession we should reduce taxes……

Bet he’ll insist that’s not true too.

  1. Fuck me.

It’s the ten commandments of tax that Murphy has written.

    The Ten Commandments.

    THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

    For fuck’s sake.

I wonder, does he see himself as the Moses of Tax or the author of the commandments.

    fucking mad.

  2. Hang on, I thought according to Spudthink MMT meant taxation was there to control inflation. So what gives in somewhere like, say, Venezuela, where apparently 26% of employable people are unemployed, but where the inflation rate is predicted to hit 2,300% this year?

    JC4PM (of Venezuela).

  3. The Ten tax commandments is a gem.
I really don’t get his insistence that tax is not for raising revenue but for controlling inflation. Seems like complete nonsense to me.
Also like his comment that the environment is where taxes reach their limit – Does that mean Pigovian taxes aren’t a thing anymore? Certainly if taxes only control inflation he can’t ever say they can be used to reduce eg pollution. (Yes I know he can say what he likes when he likes cos it depends on which hole he’s looking out of, but if it’s carved onto tablets of stone it’ll make it more difficult for him)

  4. OT, but I’ve had to stop going to Guido’s today because an ad for Anusol keeps popping up and I don’t mind colleagues seeing Guido’s site but I’m fvcked if I want them thinking I’ve been looking for pile creams.

Don’t know why, I’ve not been searching for anything like pile creams, even though I do occasionally suffer them. Maybe it’s because I am of a certain age (eg I look at pensions stuff) so the algorithm assumes I’ve probably got a fired up ringpiece?

  5. You don’t have AdBlock and Ghostery on your computer? How delightfully retro.

  6. There’s an excellent tweet from Murphy Richards, complete with appropriate Moses picture:

“You are, candidly, honoured to see the first images of me, Murphy Richards, carrying down the Ten Commandments of Tax from Mount PulledItOutMyArse. “

Spud (wgce version) got all excited about the Bishop of Wales’s 10 commandments for robots.

  7. OT – sort of. Some of the arguments he’s having on the ‘suffering and poverty’ article on his website are beyond belief.

Apparently, if you run a budget surplus e.e. Germany, Norway, you are ruining the economy, whilst running a deficit permanently is a good thing e.g. Greece, Venezuela etc.

  8. Crazy facts:

According to this site https://tradingeconomics.com/norway/government-budget , Norway ran a surplus of 3.1% of GDP in 2016 but this is way lower than the previous 8 years, where the average was 11.6%.

According to the 2016 annual report of the wealth fund https://www.nbim.no/en/transparency/reports/2016/annual-report-2016/

    it returned 447 bn NOK.

Government spending that year was 192 bn NOK and Government revenues were 281 bn NOK. So the Governmental revenues were enough for the country to run a budget surplus without drawing anything from the wealth fund and it still had inflation of about 2% and growth of 0.8%.

  9. This is good:

Guess he is less Europhile than he thought… What an utter moron.

‘MMT only works if you borrow and spend in a currency you control

Greece did it in a currency it did not control

As a result it was running a household style budget and when households overspend it ends in tears

This is why the euro is a disaster

Thank goodness the UK has never been near it’

  10. Bravefart:

‘I am sorry – but all you are offering is dogma and not a shred of argument

Unless your act improves I will not be engaging again – and nor will you’

  11. What kind of person would have the hubris to compare his idiotic pronouncements with the ten commandments?

What kind of person writes the sentences I just posted to Bravefart?

Truly the guy needs sectioning for his safety, as much as anyone else’s!

  12. VP

Indeed, is there a worse example of the type of character traits you would not want in a person who teaches than Murphy? How does he deal with students who hold different views to him – exclude them from his lectures?

  13. How would the RM mark stuff at uni? Its accepted that students can disagree with the lecturers / professors so long as they do it in the right way.
But his response to anything different is way over the top – and some stuff marked by staff at a uni is selected for checking by another marker at a different university….

  14. “You are, candidly, honoured to see the first images of me, Murphy Richards, carrying down the Ten Commandments of Tax from Mount PulledItOutMyArse. “- capt potato is a big enough arse to get the whole of the bible inscribed on stone tablets up there.

  15. From the Poverty and Suffering thread, the Great Man:

Tax justice has worked as a message
We have to make MMT work as well
Nit all in tax justice get it by a long way…..

When did he sign up to MMT? I’m sure he was “wholly” anti a short time ago.

More to the point, when did he invent it?

  16. We have to make MMT work as well
Nit all in tax justice get it by a long way…..

If tax is only a tool to fight inflation, why the ‘justice’ part? Also why worry about funds held abroad as these would have no effect on inflation here?

  17. Rob, why not ask him for the rationale for taxing offshore funds in order to control domestic inflation? You might not last long

  18. Rob, why not ask him for the rationale for taxing offshore funds in order to control domestic inflation? You might not last long

He is completely bewildering. I just don’t understand how someone can think as irrationally as that.

  19. Rob – its either he is insane or he’s saying what he says in order to get a reaction.
Then he can feel persecuted by everyone that he sees as less intelligent than he is.

  20. Martin

Murphy’s stock response to any dissenter is “right-thinking people agree with me”. You can’t really argue with that can you.

  21. Bravefart,

Murphy’s stock response is almost Pythonesque: I think all right-thinking people in this country are sick and tired of being told that ordinary, decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not! And I’m sick and tired of being told that I am.
